2003 GMC Sierra 1500 - Weird Noise?

Hey all, I just had a question that maybe someone has heard before on their older GM truck.

I just picked up a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Z71. Great shape, very clean truck, 118k miles.

When I come to a complete stop, then softly accelerate.. at about 3-4 mph, it make a little whiney pop or short moan. It almost sounds as if a drum brake were letting loose or an old shock was giving out.

I havent had the truck long so I'm still trial and error when the noise happens. I am 85% confident it isn't when it shifts.

It's all around disc brakes so I'm not sure it is a brake issue, but I could be wrong. The shock theory is kinda far fetched consider it does it on flat ground with no bumps.

Just thought I would get a thread started and see if it rang any bells; I'll continue to try and repeat the noise and see if I can't narrow it down.

Thanks everyone. Enjoy the coming of spring!

First thing that comes to my mind is that galactically craptastic parking brake setup those years had. What a POS system ... YMMV, but saw, and STILL see more failures there than anything. Could be delaminated or dragging.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that an '03 is now an "older" truck. Wow where did the time go? :(

That's kind of what I was thinkin was parking brake. I completly agree! I had a 2011 but downgraded due to upcoming wedding and so forth.. When I found this truck I was like woohoo good find on a little bit older truck, then I realized that 2003 is 12 years old and I got a little depressed lol.

Check the parking brake and lube the slip yoke

Still low miles on that for the year, so ya did good there. Most would average 180k, so your well below that. Should get alot of use out of it for your money.

Pull the driveshaft out, look at the u-joints for smooth operation in all 4 directions. Look for any red dust at the seals on each u-joint cup. If you have a hanger bearing, check it for smooth operation. Needless to say, any play in these parts mean replace.

As already said, lube the splines on the inside of the slip yoke, or yokes if you have hanger bearing. I know some will say it does not matter, but, take a tire crayon with you and mark the driveshaft to diff orientation, as well as slip yoke. It most definitely cannot hurt to mark them.

Suspension starts moving the instant anything makes the truck move, even getting in and out. A bad shock will first show up at the first bit of motion, but, most do not notice or hear it. By the time they hear it, it is obvious. Take a look at them all and see if any are starting to leak oil.

And believe it or not, the rockers and cab corners are still in tact! SLT and everything works; gave $11,750. (every other dealer is $14k+) Gotta love the small town dealerships.
