Cold weather whine - 2002 GMC 2500HD

The past 3 winters have had the same "condition" - a whine when: a) temperature below 40F, b) engine cold, and only occurs c) speeds (any gear and tow mode on or off) from 22 - 37 mph.

Generally when the temperature is above 35 - it will go away after about 3 miles, but when below it will occur from every stop for 10 miles.

Saw the comments on another forum about the whine relating to the PS pump, but there is no whine at idle and it will not occur until about 22 miles.

Took it to a transmission place and to the GMC dealer. Both heard the whine, but neither has a clue. GM came back an said it was normal, but had no comment when I asked if it was abnormal then for the first 99000 miles. Third time took it in, they thought it might be an actuator or the transmission pump, but would have to tear it down to find out.

As temperatures warming up, it will go away in about 2-3 weeks until next November - so trying to find if someone had the same issue and got it resolved.

GMC 2500HD diesel. 106000 miles, had all universal joints replaced, transmission fluid changed twice (50K and 100K). Whine only in cold weather (below 40) and engine cold. Whine only from 22-37 mph, gear and tow mode do not make any difference.

MIne is not a diesel but it is an '05 Allison (8.1L gasser) built in '04 and mine makes a similar noise, but not every time. It's very noticeable when it happens but it seems random.

Do you know what fluid (Dex III or VI) was used in your 2002 when it was changed out?
