I had a S10 blazer that the multifunction switch went bad and caused me to have no brake lights that about the only guess I got. Sorry.

The normal way of diagnosing electrical issues is really pretty easy. Check the bulbs first, then the fuses, then check for voltage at both sides of the brake light switch(if you have power on one side, but not on both sides with pedal depressed, then the switch is the likely issue), if that passes, then you need to look at turn signal switch(called multifunction switch). Most do not realize that the signals on a lot of vehicles use the same bulb as the brake lights. The signal switch has to disconnect the brake light power from the rear bulb if the signal is turned on.

BTW, if you notice on the Barrett-Jackson auctions how some of those cars selling for half a million have a brake light burned out, it is actually the turn signal is turned on, but the ign key is turned off. Try it on an older car to see what I mean. This was one of the things I (as a bored mechanic) would put a new apprentice through.
