Transfer case problem-maybe?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to diagnose a weird issue with my son's 2003 1500. Yesterday he came in the house and said his truck made a pop when he put it in gear, then he put it into reverse and it kinda lurched.

I hopped in it and drove it a bit. To me it sounded like loose chain. If I put the truck in gear and let it idle forward I could hear it. If I put the truck in neutral while coasting, the noise went away.

I remember reading that the transfer case drive chain gets loose on these trucks, then starts hitting the case.

Today, I pulled the drain plug and the fluid was clean, so I'm not sure what the deal is.

Any ideas on what it could be? I'd rather deal with it now if it is the transfer case before it lets go on the freeway.

By the way, the truck has 128k on the clock.

Thanks in advance!!!

Yes the chains crap the bed ...,, a good way to know for sure is do a 4wd brake stand ,,,, if the chain is done it'll skip like a SOB and you'll think its comin apart it's so violent

Try that, and reply back please

Hi, My 2009 GMC Sierra started making a loud boom when backing up while in 2WD. Very scary. Like you just backed into a wall. Then it starts acting normal for awhile. Now started slipping and grinding while driving. The engine revs up, so have to let off the gas. When the RPM's go back down the drive train would engage again. The problem got worse. Now having to drive it with front wheel drive (4 wheel high) because won't move in 2WD. Is anyone having this problem? Dealer says it needs a new or rebuilt transfer case. Does this sound right? Lots of money.

Thanks

Jerry

Definitely sounds like a transfer case issue to me. If you are any kind of handy you can replace the transfer case yourself but I'd confirm the problem before dropping the money on one.
