2001 burb 2500 LQ4 and a slight oil leak.

As I continue on my journey of making this new to me Suburban 2500 more road worthy, I look to the community here for advice. And I appreciate it.

 

There seems to be a very slight oil leak. It is in the area of the oil filter and what looks like a boss with a mount on it that goes to an oil cooler up front.

 

There is oil residue all over the area. At rest, the oil drips in two spots, at the oil cooler boss and at the oil filter. There is nothing remarkable about the leak, but overnight I end up with two spots on the driveway around 2" in diameter.

 

Is there or has there been a common leak in the LQ4 that I could look for? Is it possibly the oil cooler boss?

 

It does not look like it is coming from the rear main seal, or the oil pan gasket.

The oil cooler gaskets tend to leak. I'm assuming you have oil cooler lines whereas lighter duty trucks have a blockoff plate. Either way, the gasket is a buck or two on RockAuto and they're easy to replace.

 

If you want to be sure, clean the oil off the engine and check the next day to see where the oil is leaking from.

Let the truck idle for a few minutes to get the oil warm, clean it, then let it sit. You should end up with a stream of oil versus a spray, should be easy to find the culprit after this.

That looks like the blockoff plate gasket. Do you have oil cooler lines that originate from this area?

 

If you do, make sure you get the gasket for trucks with the external oil cooler. If you don't, get the blockoff plate gasket.

 

Note: Both gaskets may be the same part. I haven't compared the two in a while. The gasket I used looked identical to the picture you posted; I have a blockoff plate setup.
