Largest 2WD tires?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

What's the biggest tires I can run on a stock 2WD Silverado?  I have a 2000 Silverado ext. cab with two wheel drive and stock rubber on 16 inch rims.  I have searched the forum archives and people love the 285s - but most are on 4WD.  I don't see many comments on what I can fit into my wheel wells with the lower-than-4WD factory 2WD suspension.  I would love to put on 285/75 BFG A/Ts.  Looks like they would fit OK on the back, but not the front.  I rarely go off road and could tolerate some minor rubbing or trimming.  I do not want to add a lift kit.  Any comments would be very helpful!

(I started a new question with this since my question in another thread hadn't generated any replies.)

Thanks in advance!

:banghead: The biggest tires you will be able to fit on a 2WD are 265/75/16.  The largest tire you can get stock is 255.70.16, and you can go plus one.  Discount tire's website (www.tires.com) also has a good guide for tires - check them out.  I think the 285's on a 2wd would probably rub pretty bad - they almost rub on a 4wd.

FYI - My 2000 Yukon came stock with 265/70 R16 Fstones.  What if I have cranked my torsion bars.  Would it be possible to fit 285/75 R16, or will they rub?  I'm just looking for more height, not width.

my 2000 came with 255x75x16s.  I installed a set of 3" spindles and tried to put the 285s on and they rubbed bad. So even with the 3" lift I could only fit 265s.  with no lift it might be a tight fit with 265s.  Take it somewhere that will install the fronts and let you decide then if you want them.  I would pay close attention to the driver's side inner wheel well.  The windshield washer bottel sits just above it and when I had the 285s on (with the lift) they sat about 1/2 inch from that botte.  So one big bump and it would have been toast.  The plastic air valance (it won't let me type the D word) on the bumper would probably have to be trimmed too.

I put a set of 265x75x16's on my 02 reg cab 2wd. They fit great, and look a lot better than the pizza cutters that came with it. (It's the kick-start model.)

I don't think anything bigger would fit, the 265's pretty much fill the wheel wells.

Hi There -

New to the booard!!

I just put 285X75X16's on my Yukon 4wd, using the stock rims. I only rubbed in a tight turn... I punched a tiny hole in the front, bottom portion of the wheel-well and ran a zip-tie through it and pulled the portion that rubbed forward about 2". Instant fix!

I have 265/75/16 on my stock rims on my 99 2wd, and they fit just fine with no lift.  285's would definitely rub on our 2wd suspensions w/o any lift kit.

I am running Toyo Proxes STs in a 275/60/16 size on stock 16 x 7 rims and I have ZERO rubbing on a 2wd. If you don't off-road much, take a close look at the Toyos...tread wear rating of 420, A Temp, A Traction, a decent trailer rating (can't remember exactly) and they are fantastic in the rain. They also have a built-in rim protector to boot. Priced at $130.00 each here in my neck of the woods, so they are priced competitively as well.
