First travel trailer

I pull a 26' TT with my 5.3L CC w/ 3.42 gears and the truck pulls it fine.

I should probably get a sway bar soon though. I am not using a WD as the trailer weighs around only around 5,000 pounds. The TT has a very high tongue weight, and that's my only slight concern. But I think in your situation your tongue weight is likely to be less so you'll be fine.

You definitely should get sway control, and even though your trailer weight is lower, I think you would find a WD hitch really stables up the combination, especially with a high tongue weight.

Yep. After doing some more research and talking to a few experts, I've ordered a Husky WD hitch with sway control.

Isn't that in Colorado too? I wanted to go through the Ike Gauntlet in Colorado. I don't know if it's the same thing though.

The "Ike gauntlet" is a term I heard on Road test on the internet. I assume Ike is for Eisenhower, Pres. Eisenhower's nickname. We have the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel going through the Rockies and actually by passing Loveland pass by going under the mountain on I-70. The guys doing the road test were on I 70 approaching the tunnel. We have higher roads here, some are closed due to snow most of the year. You will notice a drastic loss of power going up to the tunnel due to lack of oxygen at that altitude. After you leave the tunnel you will be on really steep downgrades for quite a while. I use very little gas going from the tunnel clear to Denver.

Northside, how's it going? Got my new truck. Silver z71 cc 4wd w/ 6.2! Still gonna move there but gonna head up there for another visit in august. Might get a little bit bigger trailer though because my mom might be coming too. Along with my wife, my 2 kids, and my 2 dogs. Wanna look at different areas besides Fort Collins and Loveland though. Maybe Steam Boat Springs area or some other places.

Beautiful truck, man. That 6.2 shouldn't have a bit of problem. Steamboat is growing a lot. It's beautiful place, I was up there in September. Colorado is a great place to live.

I agree. My wife and I love Texas but we both agree that it's time for mountains. Lol

Guys like it says, I'm getting all the info I need to take a trip back to Colorado for a few weeks at the beginning of August with family. We want to rent a travel trailer and go to KOA parks and fun things like that. My new 2015 CC Sierra SLT has the 6.2 8spd but with the 3.23 gears but with a factory installed trailer brake controller. Wanted to take a 24 ft trailer. Needed to know what i need equipment wise to make this happen and what weights ate too much for this truck in the mountains? Sorry if I've left anything out question wise but new to the travel trailer game. Towed many trailers just not an RV.

So how was the trip? :)

I'm kinda shocked that GM even makes the 6.2L with a 3.23 rear end.

I thought the 6.2L engine would only come with a 3.42 or 3.73 rear end.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
