New Wheels & Tires - What To Do About TPMS?

Hello Everyone,

I just picked up a set of "take off" tires and wheels from Ebay as an upgrade for my truck.

The package comes with TPMS, but I'm unsure if I need to do anything to get the system to work.

Do I need to get the new TPMS programmed once the new tires / wheels are on the truck???

Thanks in advance for any and all info!

Yes you'll need to use a reset tool. You also use the reset tool just from rotating the tires. The dealer should have one and might do it for you for no charge since it literally only takes 2 minutes. You can buy a tool for $80 I think off eBay, but I don't plan on buying one until sometime after the 2 year maintenance warranty runs out.

Thanks for the info. Didn't realize the TPMS had to be reset following rotation too. I do my own maintenance (despise having to go to the dealer unless I absolutely have to) so guess the tool is needed one way or another.

Uh, no they should register after rotating the wheels a couple rotations.. Occasionally you may have to have the system reset but rarely.. At least in my experience.. And Ive rotated 2 sets of '14 and a set of '15s this week, as well as a set of wheels off a 15 GMC Yukon onto a 15 Tahoe... They all picked up within about 3ft of movement- before they were out of shop anyway. I have seen a sensor not pickup but its not often.. Id try it then u can always go by dealer and say they stopped working..

You need a relearn tool Kent-Moore EL-50448 about $70 off Amazon. They will work if you rotate the original tires, problem is you don't know which tire is which because you did not set new the locations. Very fast and simple procedure to relearn location.

They will read no problem. The issue is the positioning of the sensor. Say you put the left front tire on the right rear. If your DIC says left front 20psi and you check the left front and it physically reads 35psi, then you have to check your tires untill you find the low one. The computer will read the pressures fine but as far as their positioning, they only go by the last known location of the sensor. They have to be relearned to re-sync their location relative to the vehicle.
