CarPlay in 2016 Sierra

GMC just announced that the 2016 Sierra will have CarPlay. I was so close to buying a 2015 but I guess I'll wait it out now.

I chatted with a GMC "Specialist" last night to ask this very question, and as I suspected, he didn't have a clue. He said I needed to check directly with the dealership, and in my somewhat limited experience, they are clueless about these types of things. He said the dealer is responsible for all of those updates.

 

I am on the fence whether to find a '15 or order a '16. I really like the idea of having Android Auto (which is supposed to be supported also), and I'm still clutching to a little hope that we see air vents in the back. But the rebates and incentives on the '15 would allow me to install an aftermarket infotainment system of my choosing.

It might be a different OS in the 15 compared to the 16, but if the hardware is there, then all they would have to do is supply a download to the customers. Harley Davidson has the "Infotainment" on their 14 and newer bikes. When an update comes out, they display it on their website under the "owners" section. You download it to your computer, and then onto a usb stick, and then turn your key to "ACC". Since the 15's have 2 USB ports in the center console, this is entirely possible.

From what I've gathered the hardware should still be essentially the same. The 2016 looks so hideous that I'm thinking of getting a 2015 and doing a software update. There's actually a lot of fiddling around that can be done with the software if you know the right people. There's a guy on here who sells a factory navigation system by putting the software into the computer. I've bought this and it works great. There's another company that'll let you mirror your phone onto the screen and takes away safety controls like typing on the screen while driving. They also had an update so you can have texting/message on your MyLink. I think the 2015 has it but 2014 doesn't, so they're selling it as an update for the 2014.

 

Anyway, I think I'm going to wait for the 2016 to come out to see exactly what the deal is and if they let you keep the old front end I'll definitely get the 2016. Otherwise I'll get a 2015 since dealers would want to push that inventory out.

Also, car play looks really cool and all, but it does need internet for a lot of the apps to work. Like the navigation for instance. The factory one works off of GPS and the maps are pre-loaded. So if you go out in the country to camp or whatever and you don't have internet it'll still work fine. This is one of the reasons why I think I can live without it for now. Although I would still want to try and load it onto a 2015.

Or, buy a '15 and get a better head unit for less than stock.

CarPlay will not work on the '15 models ... it requires a faster processor.
