Diff cover gasket sealer

I am about to change my differential oil (2000 Silverado 4WD) and will replace the diff cover in the process. My question is do I apply gasket sealer on only one side of the gasket, or both? If only one side, then which side?

Thanks, John

Yep, always both sides.

On stuff like this that I service regularly, I usually just grease both sides of the gasket. Makes the next service SOOO much easier - gasket just peels right off with your fingers in 3 seconds.

Regarding some synthetics, I haven't found a sealer yet that will keep Amsoil Severe Gear in (relying 100% on sealer with no gasket) . On our Grand Marquis, I've tried 1194, Permatex Ultra Copper, and Permatex Right Stuff - all leaked - and all of these have proven to be the best at holding back oil, in my experience. Years ago, Ultra Copper would hold conventionals in forever.

Guess I need to break down and buy a gasket for the thing ...

Neither. That is what the gasket is for
