Hello Everyone,

I am going to be putting a 6 or 7.5 inch lift on my truck soon and I need to decide what tires to go with.

I have been trying to decide on 33's or 35's. I think I am just going to go with the 35's on a 20x10 rim, but now I need to figure out what tire to go with.

I do not offroad my truck (my wife would kill me). I just want the most offroad looking tire I can get, but I want it to drive good, be as quite as possible (of course I am expecting some noise), and I want to make sure it will last me.

I really like the looks of the Nitto Trail Grappler and the Toyo Open Country MT. Anyone have any good/bad experiences with these tires? How many miles can I expect to get out of these?

My local shop recommended the Toyo Open Country AT2. He said I would probably get 60,000 miles out of these. Anyone running these in a 35? I am kind of on the fence with the looks of these. Definitely like the Trail Grappler and M/T's better, but if they drive way better and last way longer, then I will probably go with the AT2's.

Also, I was wondering if weight made a big difference with MPG? I know I will be loosing some with the size alone.

Thanks for your help!

Hey glad to hear you will be lifting your truck soon! I bet you will love the finished look. So about the tires I have the same size tire but in atturo trail blade mts and they ride pretty good and don't make to much noise. For the price I got them at I could not justify getting those other tires. I have some friends with lifted trucks and some of them run the at2's and they love them. They have had them for over 20k miles and they still look like new with nice even tread wear. I can also tell you when I lifted mine with a 8" and 35's the mpg went down about 1-2mpg but I have been taking it easy with it also. BTW I have the 5.3 with 3.42 gears. Would love to see some pictures when it's done!

if you're going to go with Toyo, you might consider the Open country RTs instead - still somewhat of a more aggressive looking tread but not as harsh and loud of a ride as the MTs....I had Nitto Trail Grapplers on my other Sierra at 35x12.50/20s and loved them, i think the tread looks a little more aggressive than the Terra grapplers....depends on how much you want in the look vs. quiet/smooth ride.....

here's the Nitto's I had...

How does your truck ride with the 8" lift? Mine is silver as well. I was trying to look at your profile picture, but I would not let me enlarge it. I think I have the same rims as you too or at least pretty close (fuel maverick / machined face).

Yeah the guy at the shop said the AT2's are their best seller right not.

Trail Grapplers! Yes, I meant to say Trail Grapplers not Terra Grapplers (had to go back and edit that). I really like the looks of them, but I was not sure if the AT2's were a much better ride and if they lasted longer.

I will have to check out the RT's as well.

I have to imagine you lost more than 1-2mpg putting on a 8" lift and 35" tires?

I know it sounds pretty good almost unimaginable but before the lift I was getting only about 15.3mpg and after the lift I am getting 13.4. Both of those are last 400 miles. Before the lift in the DIC for lifetime mpg I was getting 14.9 and now it has 13.5 and the truck only has 14k and put the lift on at about 8.5k. I definitely have been driving the truck easier and maybe that is why my drop is not accurate but I was just throwing it out there, everyone's driving habits are different.

Ha, ok....I believe your 1-2mpg loss since you were getting only 15.3 before the lift and 35s. I was imaging you getting 18ish before and 16/17 after.

No I wish and I can imagine where you are coming from, I was never getting the amazing advertised mpg but I am happy I didn't lose a ton or else that would be a problem. How is your mpg

When I'm 75% city, I get about 15.5mpg. When I'm 50/50 I get 17.5mpg. When I'm 75% highway I get 19.5.

Oh wow that is pretty good, any mods that might decrease or increase the mpg?

Yeah, I am happy with the MPGs I'm currently getting.

Decrease Probables: 2" Level, Cooper ATP 33" All Terrain Tires, 1.5" Spacers, Range AFM Disabler (most of the time I have it plugged in)

Increase Probably: Airraid MIT, DynoMax catback (replaced VT muffler with FlowMaster Super 40)

I'll probably get a real tune here shortly, so I don't have to use the Range AFM Disabler much longer.

Thank you very much for the good info I'm all stock now and working on getting some stuff done under the hood for a little more power. I like your list of stuff done though

No problem at all, good luck. There is a lot I want to do, but I haven't found that magic money tree in my yard yet.

My vote for great MT tire is the Firestone Destination MT.

Tread = extremely aggressive. IMO more so than Nitto trail grappler.

Ride = they ride like a MT at very low speed but rolling speed the truck rides great.

Gas mileage = if that's an issue do not modify your truck as no 35" tire will give you good mileage.

Noise = not bad at all. All MT tires will hum a little. Some more than others. So I say on the lower end for this tire.

Reviews = nothing but good reviews. A quick Google shows probably best rated MT tire on market.

Cost = I paid 280.00 a tire compared to 400-450 for Nitto or Toyo.

Pro comp extreme AT's on mine, they ride decent and are wearing even at 10k miles, BUT they are a bit noisy. Just throwing

out another tire to consider. Paid $350 each for them. Avg around 14.5 mpg with diablo intune on 87 octane canned tune.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
