Transfer case questions NQH MP3023u

Hey, i have a 2007 gmc sierra new body style 4auto. got MP3023 and recently i tried putting the truck into 4wd after i noticed the previous owner disconnected the shifter motor. plugged it in and put it into 4wd, the tcase went into neutral and would not go out of neutral. would grind everytime i put it in park but other than that the vehicle acted as it was in neutral even when in gear/park ect. i took the tcase apart and there was some metal shavings inside the planetary gears. my question is, where does this lobe have to be to be in 4hi/lo, neutral, and 2wd. Those shift motors have to be pretty strong its hard to muscle the lobe into place. ive muscled it at the end of the lobe so it locks in and the part that spins the chain to the front driveshaft locks in place. Im wondering now if it was only the shift motor lol.
