4.8 liter GM engine

I know this engine has no distributor.

I see 8 individual coils (one per spark plug)

Is there some sort of "master coil" or

is that all there is to a computerized ignition system less the computer.

Can I buy the short little spark plug wires aftermarket?

Can the individual coils be replaced with any aftermarket brand?  I am a little confused because you don't hear much about these distributorless ignitions they are somewhat new in the past decade Any help or opinions would be great!

I'm sure there is a crank sensor/trigger that tells the computer where the engine is in it's rotation and firing order.  This info is then sent to energize the coil packs at the proper time.

I haven't heard of any after market coil pack set ups yet, but you can buy after market plug wires from Taylor , Magnecore ,and a hand few of others.  I'm sure there will be some performance ignition goodies in the future for these engines...just have to wait and see

There aren't any coil replacements but you can upgrade the plugs and wires. I run the Direct Hits ignition in both of my 8.1 trucks. Saw a little better throttle response from this along with improved mileage (checked the mileage on two 1000 mile trips).

Info for the Direct Hits is -

With the DirectHits Ignition upgrade you just need to remove your old plugs and wires and install the high-voltage ignition system. The high energy-density spark system produces a flame kernel and flame front that propagates more quickly and completely through the fuel charge. This increases throttle response, acceleration, fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. Long-term benefits include reduced carbon buildup in the combustion chamber and extended service periods. This Electrical Power product improves the transfer efficiency of your ignition system. Its patented technology raises the level of efficiency over 500 times. Upgrade to improve fuel economy and performance and provide cleaner combustion -- all due to increased high current discharge at the instant of ignition

Each kit includes:

DirectHits current peaking capacitors - 1 for each cylinder

High energy 8mm wire set

Premium non-resistor sparkplugs ( Bosch/Accel/NGK depending on the application)

Installation tool (plastic 3/4' 12 point 1/4' drive socket to install the DirectHits properly to 12 inch/lbs of torque)

Dielectric grease for all elements.

B8872-C

1999+ 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 and 8.1 Direct Hits Ignition

$259.99

Hope this helps,

Tom
