tire help for a 2012 GMC 2500HD Sierra

Hey guys, im wondering, what is the biggest tire (width wise) I can get away with on a bone stock 2012 GMC Sierra 2500 HD?

 

Its got LT265 / 60R20's on it now.

Would like it to look a bit more beefy... I would also like to be able to possibly use a spacer to get them to stick out more.

 

I really don't want to install a lift kit because its a work truck (company owned) so I don't want to put too much $$$ into something I don't really own. Its not leased, we bought it outright in 2012 for my boss as his company vehicle but, he just bought himself a new Jeep so we traded in my 2010 F150 and I took over this GMC because its a lot nicer than the Ford and I was always a GM guy anyways! lol

From what I have found, the largest that will fit on our trucks is a 295/55/20, possibly a 305/55/20. You may need to crank the t-bars a little depending on your truck. Easily done. Just need a socket and a jack.

 

I have been hoping someone would come out with a 275/60/20, though it isn't much different in size than stock. The 285/55/20 is a little smaller diameter, but a little wider. The 295 is about the same diameter (just a little larger from what I recall), same with the 305.

275/65/20 and 305/55/20 are both pretty common on trucks like yours, with a few cranks on the torsion bars. 295/55/20 and 275/60/20 should both fit without any trouble at all.

Thanks guys. the "265" part of the tire size is the height correct? so the bigger the number, the taller the tire. so a 295/55/20 is taller and wider than a 275/60/20 ?

 

Cranking up the T Bar, will that hurt the alignment any and how bad of a ride will it have afterwards?

 

What about wheel spacers, what size can I get away with if I use my stock tires and not crank the t bars? My guess is that if I use too large a spacer, the stock tires will rub on the fender when I turn?

how do you turn em up? I saw a video awhile back that made it look kind of complicated with out a lift and an air gun. is it something doable on my back in the drive way with a regular hand ratchet or breaker bar? My compressor died and I haven't replaced it yet! lol

Actually, the first number in a metric tire size is the width of the tire in millimeters. The second number is called the aspect ratio, which translates into the height of the sidewall. The aspect ratio helps to determine the tire's height because it's expressed as a percentage of the tire's width. Let's take a 305/55/20 tire vs a 275/65/20 for example. Most would think that the 305 tire is taller, but in this case, it's not. It's only wider. The 305/55/20 tire is 305mm wide (or 12.1 inches), and the sidewall height is 55% (because the second number is 55) of the width...so that means the sidewall is 167.75mm tall. To determine the overall height of that 305/55/20 tire....you double the sidewall height (which comes to 335.5mm) and convert that number to inches (which comes to 13.2") and then add that number to the rim size (20)...so that tire is 33.2" tall and 12.1" wide. Now for the 275/65/20....the width is 275mm (or 10.8 inches)...and the sidewall height (65% of 275) is 178.75mm. So now we double the sidewall height and convert it to inches (178.75 x 2 = 357.5mm....which equals 14.1 inches)...and add that to the rim size (14.1 + 20 = 34.1). So a 275/65/20 tire is 34.1" tall and 10.8" wide.

 

 

Edit: And to answer your question about cranking the torsion bars...you don't need a lift or air tools. Just block the back tires...jack up the front end to take some weight off (and use jack stands for safety)...grab a good 3/4" drive ratchet or breaker bar (and socket, but I can't remember what size at the moment) and start cranking (you'll actually be tightening the bolt). Just be sure to keep track of how many turns you're going. I usually use the frame cross-member as a reference point for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 turns, etc. I'd start with 4-5 turns (same number on both sides)...let it down, drive it around the block so it settles, and evaluate from there. If you stay under 2.5" of lift, your ride shouldn't suffer too much.

wow... who'd-a thunk it.. lol I always thought that the "60" or the "50" were the width.. like say if a car had a set of "N-50's" on the back or "60's" on it... it meant they were fat tires. lol

 

So why do they make it so complicated instead of making it easier by stating tire height x rim by tire width like on ATV tires ... like my trike, the back tires are 22 - 8 x 11... ( 22" tall x 8" rim x 11" wide.) lol

Haha yeah I know. I've always been a tire nut, so I have a good understanding of the sizes...but it can be quite difficult for many to understand...and rightfully so. My buddies are always calling or texting me with tire questions, haha. Many tire companies still offer traditional sizes, like 33x12.50x20, but there's a lot more options in the metric sizes.

Oh, they're still out there, but the metric sizes are much more common these days. I think the draw of the metric sizes is that many of them tend to run a bit narrow for their height (when compared to something like an old school 33x12.50). The more narrow tread width helps them clear the fenders easier, allows the use of stock rims, and helps them have better road manners than a wide tire.

 

BTW, you could also look at a 295/60/20 tire. That's like a 34" x 11.5" Those would probably fit with stock rims and a few turns on the bars. And you could probably even run a 33x12.50x20 if you wanted to. You might need to trim a bit of plastic though.

Glad BW answered the t-bar question. TY BW!!

 

I haven't really come across anything stating a 34" tire will fit with the stock rims (or aftermarket rims) without some form of trimming.

 

If you do get a larger set to fit please post up!!!

    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31.
