2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Transmission Replacement

I am replacing a 4L60E transmission in a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500. Old tranny has been removed and received reman tranny yesterday. Installation instructions say to reset the adaptive memory with a scan tool before operating. This makes sense to me, but my question is: Do I have to have my truck towed to a dealer to do this or can I buy a "pricey" scan tool to do the job? Any feedback/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dealer basically. They have to program with the tech 2

Makes total sense, but how come I don't hear of anyone having their vehicle towed to a dealer to get it reset after putting in a tranny? Are they just lucky that their tranny didn't get damaged or just don't know it yet? ;)
