6" OEM assist steps- Silverado

Hopefully this is the right place to post this...

 

I've purchased the 6" oval (actually rectangle, but they say oval...) assist steps for my 2016 Silverado. I'm trying to install them, but they did not come with any instructions. I've found a set of instructions posted on here, and through those and some video's I've found, I pretty well understand how the brackets attach to the truck itself.

 

The problem is, I can't figure out how the brackets attach to the bottom of the step itself. There are two tracks that run parallel down the length of the step, and it appears that a nut would fit inside this track, which could then be attached to the bolts coming up through the bracket. However, the only way to get the nut into the track is to remove the end caps from the step, or least that's how it appears to me. I don't want to take the endcaps off if this is not the right way to go about this, so I'm looking for some input.

 

Anyone installed these and able to tell me if I'm on the right track (no pun intended!)?
