2008 Silverado 1500 4.3 V6 2wd

Hi All-

 

I am looking into purchasing a 2008 Silverado 1500 4.3 Vortex 2wd std. cab & bed. The truck has 74k original miles but when I was test driving it, I noticed the 1-2 shift to be a bit on the firm side, almost felt like it had an aftermarket shift kit or something. I didn't notice any other trans issues but I have heard these trucks are known to have trans issues. Should I be worried or is this normal for this pickup? i was planning on having it inspected at a local trans shop just in case.

 

I don't know a ton about this specific truck, so any other helpful quick info/links would be greatly appreciated!

Have it thoroughly looked over by a qualified mechanic. You probably have no worries

If you have snow or mud I strongly suggest 4X4, could not live without mine, even in heavy rain I kick it on sometimes, it adds great traction to the truck

I've never seen the 1-2 shift to be a bit on the firm side (unless there is a shift kit as you mentioned)

In the old days it could have been a bad vacuum line or the shift modulator

Thanks Joe! Well, I am buying this for the time being and am upgrading to a 4x4 in about 6 months to 1 year. What would you think this truck might sell for in general...it books for about $9k in very good condition KBB. Do these things typically sell for about what KBB is even though its the base model?

Chevys always sell for more than the other brands of truck, people know they LAST !! Seems like its very hard to find one much cheaper than Kelly Book value, I got a 2012 with 20K on it for about $21K this was after shopping for a LONG time, even the private sellers want more for their Chevys, I learned in the early 70's that Chevy/GMC had the best drivetrains and nothing will ever change my mind about it, just seen too many other brands die too easy

 

My boss buys them for snow plowing, and I Beat the living crap out of his truck going forward and reverse moving snow as fast as possible (he wants us to use them that way) Anyway my current plow/salt truck is a 2004 that I have been driving HARD for the last 12 years, never had any engine or trans trouble, They are truly amazing, before that he had a Ford that only lasted through 5 years of plowing and the trans went LOL

 

My brother got a Dodge truck for about 12k and picked on me for "splurging" on a Chevy..... His truck is gone now, he sold it

 

Just keep in mind they're worth the extra money, Good Luck, and let us know how you make out, and we love pics !!

What a funny guy your boss! But also a great testament to Chevy pickups! I am definitely getting a good deal on the truck, even with it needing the drivers side mirror glass and a very good detail! I grew up riding in and driving my dads Suburbans and his Corvette's. He currently owns a 2007 LTZ Suburban w/175k original miles all driven by him and our family and it looks better than the day it rolled off the showroom floor. He will be ordering a Borla S Type catback for his 2014 White Grand Sport in the coming days. Bowtie for life!

Its my buddies mom is selling it on behalf of her brother who passed recently. Her other brother has the title an POA to the truck, but we have settled on a very fair price...

My only plans for the pickup would be a 2/4" drop paired with the super classy 5 spoke polished aluminum 20" wheels. The truck I will be buying has stock Alloys with nice tires...wonder how much I could get for those on Craigslist? I may add a billet grill and do something with the headlights and potentially add some audio but I want to keep it nice and simple and clean.

I haven't had time to compare/contrast the tire sizes, but I am fairly confidente the rolling diameter should be pretty close, or close enough to not see a negative effect on the trucks ride.

 

I am actually coming from a 2004 Ford Focus SVT EAP which is one of the sweetest little cars I have ever owned. I am parting out the aftermarket parts I added and then will detail and list it i for sale this weekend. If all goes as planned, I will be driving the Silverado next weekend-ish, then the fun stuff begins! I will fully wet sand, compound and polish the paint to perfection and then start my search for the proper lowering kit, wheels. audio and grill. SO stoked to finally have a pickup again! My wife is a wood worker and always has gravel/dirt/rock that needs hauling so I think I've got a lot of Brownie Points coming my way...
