Holy S*#@t! What the hell were they thinking???

Actually, I guess they were thinking "...who would ever want to remove our beautiful plastic rail caps?"

My last rack was installed with small (1/4 or 5/16 dia.) nuts and bolts (two on each side) going through the inside vertical lip of the rack-rails and box. It was very secure and virtually unnoticeable when the rack was removed. This may be an option for you as from what I can tell from your picture your rack is constructed in the same manner as the one I had. I live close to www.expresscustom.ca/ and they did the manufacture and install. I was worried about them drilling holes until I saw how insignificantly it impacted my truck.

My rack was secured with a 'drill-less' system. Basically a three sided piece of 1/4" aluminum bracket with a captive nut fits in the stake holes and is secured with 1" bolt to the box through a pre-existing hole. A long bolt is inserted through a hole in the rack and screws into this bracket. See the picture:

This looks like a good and solid way to attach the rails. The picture sent by dkweeks certainly was a surprise! I had no idea the top of the box was so perforated! I don't know if you've bought your new rails yet but there is quite a demand for used headache rack and rail sets like yours. I was able to sell mine on http://www.used.ca/ for a good price. The short rails by themselves would be hard to sell. The amount I got for selling as a set would have made it cheaper for me to buy a completely new set than if I was to have new rails made and kept my old headache rack. Just an idea...

My bed got bent when they loaded a round hay bale and missed, the guy sat it on the bed rail right in the middle where the plastic says GMC. I havent took off the plastic but im sure the bed was also bent. Is this something a body shop can fix? Ive never had to do body work on anything and im stressed out. It looks a lot worse in person, i cant get a good picture of it but i tried my best. Thanks for your time
