Modifying the Cargo light behavior

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 Silverado with a Leer 122 camper shell. I added a LED light bar and wired it to the cargo light (with the shell this light is useless, but it was pre-wired and located in the perfect location. of course I didn't know that the cargo light will not work when the truck is in drive. I would LIKE to find a way to put power to the switch, and have seen some ways for older models, but I don't know if there is a way to do this for the 2016.

the idea is to not have to add more switches and wiring if I can avoid it.

What are trying to do with your light bar. Turn it on to illuminate area while backing? Understanding your needs will help with getting suggestions.

I posted it before but it will work while rolling down the road just have to pop the truck in neutral, hit the switch, then when you put it back in gear it will cut back off

I need the light to be on when I am rolling full time, so popping into neutral wont fit my need. I use it when I am driving off road on rough terrain. the light has to be off when I am on the highway or on normal roads. I am trying to make it so that the light uses the preexisting switch for the cargo light. I am hoping to avoid having to pull new wire and drill anything, just use what is there that isn't useful.

its bcm programed. your only option is to buy the consel switch that has additional aux switches on it (retains factory switches) and pull wire to the new aux switch

The power for the cargo lights is controlled by the BCM. You would have to modify that for the light to stay on. Just hide a switch somewhere and drink a beer. Life will be easier.

Sorry man, you have to put a hard wired switch in. There is no way around it using the cargo light switch.

Could you pull the switch out of the dash and run new wires to it?. I would think you could buy a new harness for it rewire it then leave the original harness to make it back stock if need be
