We are supposed to get 10" but so far I'd say weve gotten less than an inch and by the looks of that radar it's pretty much by me  :ehh:

We've got a few inches here already.  Took the truck out for some midnight fun.  Did a few donuts, then went out for a bite to eat and managed to do a powerslide in 4x4 and end up sideways between two curbs *whoops.  And this was a total accident.  Oh well, had some fun and then came home since I was almost out of gas.

What is this thing called "snow" you talk about?  I feel so deprived. I want snow!!!!  I wanna do donuts in snow and slide around trying my best not to kill myself in the snow.  I want snow!!! Stupid Stupid Stupid Stupid desert.  The only thing covering the streets here is a couple of inches of dirt and sand.  :angry:  :angry:

so far we got 4-6".  5 more coming today.  Right now its a wet snow (very heavy).  Its kinda to warm (35) to snow which sucks

We ended up getting something like 6", I think. Maybe a little more. What was cool is that there was actually a little wind to whip it around some and get a few little drifts going. We only got the really small, wimpy flakes, not the cool, big wet ones. We could have really had a nice blizzard going because it snowed all night and until afternoon yesterday and all we got was in the 6 inch range. Man, coulda been really fun. Must be because it was so cold this week.....sucked the moisture out of it, or something. I'm not a metorphalologistimus, or whatever, so I dunno........... :D

 

I'll have to head up into the mountains today and see what they got and play up there!!!!!!

 

 

If you guys turn your ears west-ward ( most of you guys) and hear what sounds like a Chevy 5.3 getting into the rev-limiter, it is probabaly just me getting stuck in the mountains somewhere.  ;)

 

Please don't send Newbie to rescue me :withstupid:

This damn snow thing is pissing me off.  They said 10-14" with very cold temps and high winds.  So last night I went out at 6:30 in the dark before the snow started and put the snowblower on the tractor, somewhat of a pain in the ass.  So far we are at 5-6" with it about 33 degrees, but the winds just kicked up, so I may be spending the afternoon trying to keep the lane open if it keeps up.  

 

But to this point, no such blizzard like the news channels keep saying, just a nice gentle snowfall.

Not sure where you are but if ur close to Champaign it's coming your way cause it snowing like a bee-yotch here in west central IL

I got the #### out of C-U for the weekend, so I'm home now.  We have 5" on the ground now, maybe 8" by the time this is over.  

 

I didn't know you were from IL, I split my time between C-U and home here by the Quad Cities.

      Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter

      I had an alternator fail that was shorted internally in such a direct fashion in addition to the larger gauge cables that it appeared like a VERY dead battery. Granted I think the car did power up, it definitely wouldn't start.   Rodent damage to wiring?

      Using experience to justify bad advice is lazy and typical of someone incapable of articulating why their advice is prudent.    This immediately sets off the BS alert and the advice that followed certainly qualified.   Asking an idiot for help getting out of dumb situations because he is an expert... at getting himself into dumb situations.   Unless I've been living in an alternate universe - the first thing everyone does when getting into a sticky situation is shift to a higher gear 🤨.   Of course not, the torque multiplication, mechanical advantage and finer control typically afforded by the lower gear is far better suited for this scenario.   There ARE scenarios where a higher gear MIGHT be appropriate determined more by the drivers ability to control EXCESSIVE wheel spin versus applying torque to the ground.

      I'm not sure I agree with "extreme" low speed, high torque sentiment here with regards to the prescribed use of low range. How about...whenever it's needed?   A 2.72:1 transfer case and whatever differential gears these Silverados have (3.42's, maybe?) aren't producing "extremely" low crawl speeds. Or insanely high torque multiplication. Even with the 1st gear in these newer transmissions. But it does provide mechanical advantage and potentially better control at slower speeds. And with extra weight or towing, I think it adds mechanical sympathy for the truck as well.   Plus, traction control and the other assists generally turn off when you shift into low range. Those aren't needed here, they'll work against you if you need wheel spin. In high range you'll need to figure out how to turn off the various modes those assists provide. Depending on the vehicle, those things don't all automatically turn off or turn completely off.   While I agree that a farmer might have some great practical experience, a recommendation to "always" using one gear isn't very informed advice. If the farmer had said WHY and could explain the physics behind his prescriptive "always" I'd definitely listen. The way he's described here makes it sounds like he could either be uninformed or is telling everyone what worked for him, not necessarily that there could be a more advantageous way about things.
