Tonneau for 2011 Sierra on 2016 Silverado

When I got my 2016 Silverado, I was hoping to be able to use the tonneau cover from my 2011 Sierra on it. The tonneau cover is a GM tonneau cover (part 20962145). The problem is that the tonneau cover has alignment tabs that are supposed to go into the front stake holes but Chevy, in its infinite wisdom, decided to cover up the front stake holes.

I figure I have three options:

  1. Remove or cut the tabs on the cover so that it lays flat on the bed rails
  2. Cut the stake hole covers out
  3. Get a new tonneau cover

Option 3 is obviously a little pricey and I don't really want to cut out the stake holes. That leaves me with option 1.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and what their solution was.

You are probably in a better position to answer your own question. Does it fit? I wouldnt hack up my truck or tonneau to make-do.

Better to sell it and offset the cost of a new one if it doesnt fit.

Well, I assumed that it would fit the new truck since both trucks were crew cabs but I did, as you suggest, put it on the new truck to make sure. It does fit, dimension-wise, it's just the tabs that are, or were, a problem. I decided to cut them out. I wanted to remove them intact but could see no easy way to do it so I just cut the tabs that held them in. It was soft rubber so it didn't require too much effort.

The cover fits just fine. I just have to spend a little more time aligning it than I had to before.
