I have a 2005 5.3. I have recently been getting the code that my cat is going bad. I could either take them off and bypass the o2 sensors or replace the cat witch would cost more money. I am trying to maximize my fuel economy. I am running a 2.5 inch lift with 33 a/t. I am currently getting 13. I don't have a cold air intake or programmer.

Could be the o2 sensor after the cat is bad.

 

If you are dead set on removing the cats, your are gonna have the light on anyway unless you get a custom tune.

 

If the truck is your driver, not just a mud toy, fix it and keep the cats.

 

More than likely, all 4 o2 sensors could be tired/lazy.

 

Fuel economy? 33" tires and a lift?

Looks a lot closer to $200 for all 4 sensors.

 

And that would be buying the most expensive parts at Rock Auto

You mentioned you were all about the fuel economy.

 

Nice, fast, fresh o2 sensors are high on the list of making your truck run as good as it can. That would go much farther than removing your catalytic converter and continuing to run your ride in a poor state of tune.

 

Regardless of whether or not you decide to remove your emissions equipment or not, getting your truck to run to perfection is the best way to ease the pain of low miles per gallon (or turn your 33"s through the bogs or across the desert).

 

While you are at it, a nice, clean MAF sensor is pretty important also...

 

It's not like it's 1981 anymore. The cats on your truck flow pretty good, rarely go bad unless abused and with a stock motor, you will not realize much in performance gains pulling them.

 

Have you been running your truck with a bad misfire for a while? Do you go through a lot of oil? If so, then the cat may really be dead.

Do new O2 sensors improve mileage? How often do they go bad? I'm sure mine are originals, 11 years old and 140k miles...

O2 sensors definitely have a finite lifespan.

 

Even if they "work" enough to not throw a code, they get "lazy" with age and miles.

 

Typically, you can back probe them to see how fast/well they are cycling (measuring in milivolts).

 

So, yes, in short, you can improve mileage if you have slow/lazy sensors.

 

I treat em like tune up parts. Change plugs, change at least the upstream o2 sensors.

Also, you need to troubleshoot what made the cat go bad. Most likely with the loss in fuel economy, understanding you have 33's and a lift, your computer is dumping more fuel in to compensate for some type of lean condition. I would first check for a vacuum leak. Plug a scan tool in and see what the fuel trims are.

 

If your cats are in fact bad, they are getting cheaper. I just bought one for my son's Monte Carlo for $165 off of Amazon.

 

Second if this is your DD and you want better fuel economy, return it to near as stock as possible. Or, park it and get something better on fuel. I wonder if over on the Prius forums they have people wondering how to increase the payload or towing capacity of their cars.....

 

I parked my Silverado, bought a Chevy Cruze Turbo Diesel for commuting. 42-46MPG on the highway.

And, I forgot to mention, I replaced all four O2 sensor's on my pickup earlier this summer.

 

I got all four sensors from Amazon for $144.24. AC-Delco Part # 213-1702.

Removing cats will not improve mpg, it could get worse with no O2 sensors. The GM cats have been highflow since they Vortec'd back in 1996.

Yep.

 

This is a cheap example. Probably fine for occasional use. I have a K/D version of this tool and a 3/8 drive, "crowfoot" version.

I really only use the "special" tool to install a new sensor. I clip the wires on the the sensor to be removed and use a standard deep well socket or box end wrench most of the time.

Technically, if you do not have converters, present on your vehicle that is less than twenty five years old, that will fail inspection. 

More and more places are going to emissions testing also. The emission testing is tied in with the state's computer and they will know who does and who does not passed emissions test.

Depending on if You are ever stopped for a DOT inspection on the road, You could receive a fine for the catalytic converter removal.

Re-read the 10-year-old thread. 

It will run the same.

You will have to get a custom tune to solve the check engine light.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
