U-bolt grief

I had my dealer re-torque my u-bolts at 30000kms. Under warranty, no issue. I took my truck in today at 70000km for one of its free oil changes and for giggles, last night i grabbed a torque wrench (set at 50#) and all of the nuts were loose again.

I mentioned it to the service advisor, the tech checked them and, yup, they are loose. Thanks Captain obvious. My dealer will not honour their fix at 30k saying that I should have noticed the issue earlier. They say that the fix is $150 but will do it for $75. But if it happens again they will warranty their work.

So, being the simple civil servant that I am, i ask why they will warranty it next time and not this time. The song and dance routine went on for about 15 minutes. finally i just gave in and agreed to pay.

Really long story short, if you have had the u-bolts done, check them again. And, complain profusely about vibration and clunking.

IMNTBHO; the shackle threads or the nut threads are suspect here. Go to a "real" spring shop!!! They'll torque everything down almost to where you cannot break them freee!!!

From what I read on here, the TQ spec is actually 79 ft lbs. Just TQ them yourself since you say you have a TQ wrench. I TQed mine to 79 when I first read about the nuts being loose. I believe I TQed them 2 years ago and still fine.

I have a 2016 Sierra 2WD Crew Cab with about 1000 miles on it. Just checked mine and they not at 79 ft lbs. Just TQ'ed them down and went for a ride. The clunk I was getting from the rear is now gone.

Thanks for the good info!!!

If you worry about torqued nuts coming loose, use some Blue Loktite on the threads. It will keep them from loosening.
