Mud flaps in front of rear tires

Can someone tell me what the purpose of these mud flaps there in the front of the rear tires are for

They are for aerodynamics. Probably adds 0.01 mpg. I removed mine just because they look silly.

I made some trim pieces to cover up the area where the flaps were.

Are the trim pieces part of the old mud flap?

They're made from 0.100" thick HDPE plastic.

I think i am going to scrib them while they are on truck where they come out past the fender take them off trim that part off then put back on .

those mudflaps are there to pick up road debris and be bent into the rear tires.
