Ah, I did not realize they were so different, thanks for the info as I was contemplating doing this in the future. I have read a few other threads and just want to make sure I understand but basically what I have gathered from it is that it is just a clearance issue with the stock housing, is that correct? I can't believe GM wouldn't have tried to standardize the housing so that all factory options would work.

Just going by the info provided by AAM on their website, they list the same carrier for both 9.5" and 9.76". Only way I would know to fit a larger diameter ring gear into a housing and keep production costs down would be to shorten pinion length and machine housing accordingly or produce center section of the housing from a completely different casting. However they are doing it, pinion gear needs to move .130" away from axle centerline.

When you did the gear swap, what did you do for a carrier? Did you do the Yukon setup using the earlier 9.5" gear set with the adapter yoke, etc or did you get a stock GM carrier and use the AAM gears? I believe you also had to replace the complete front 8.25" assembly?

[i used the AAM gears with the stock carrier. I am from MD so I took it to east coast gear supply and it was done in less than a day. Give them a call they know everything. I drove 6+ hours to have them do the work and would do it again in a heart beat.
