Daytime running light

Recommended Posts

I own a 03 Yukon and just noticed that the driver side daytime running light has gone out several days ago. Driving around, I'm noticing that a lot of GM and Chevy truck have only one side (usually driver side) of the daytime running light that is out. Does anyone else have this problem and know any fixes?

Thanks,

Jason

You aren't the only one that has noticed that about half of the tahoes, suburbans, and silverados have at least one of their DRLs burned out. I think GM got a good deal on cheap bulbs. You can take it to the dealership and they will fix it under warranty, probably right there on the spot.

I don't think lights are covered by warranty, just like filters, fluids and anything else that can wear out. But if they do cover it...let me know. Just curious how many hours are on your vehicle. Think, these lights are on every time the vehicle is on during the daytime, unless you shut them off. The hours can add up for a cheap bulb.

Replace them with a long life bulb. I put in 4157NALL bulbs (Amber and Long Life) Originals lasted a few months, the replacements lasted over a year and a half and 60K miles before one went out. I just replace both of them when one goes out.

I have found that the problem isn't the bulb...it is water getting into the housing and then causing the light to go out. All three times one of my DRL's has gone out it has been right after I have washed the truck. I wash it and then start it to move it into the garage.

Anyway, last time I replaced one, I took a look at the housing and there is a gap between the lens and the backing. I put a bead of silicone to fill the gap and I haven't had the lamp go out since.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Switched to those bulbs shortly after new on my 99...still going strong. Worth the switch to amber too, sweet look.

When mine go out they wont be replaced. I don't understand GM's attraction to DRL's in the first place.

One advantage to having them is you do get an insurance discount, whatever it may be. I was also under the impression that lights, along with filters, etc., would not be covered under warranty. I don't have any problems with mine, but one of the DRLs on my Uncle's suburban went out and they replaced it under warranty. You truck is brand new. It's an '03. Those lights should not be burning out that quickly, no matter what the cause. I know just going out and buying a new bulb is cheap, but what would you do if every single bulb on the entire truck burned out all at once? You would be back at the dealership bitchin. That would add up real quick...I don't even think you have to drop the truck off. They will probably fix it right there on the spot. Good luck!!

My wife's 'burban has burned out two DRL bulbs in the last six months. The dealer fixed them under warranty, but it's still a pain in the ass to go by there.

By the way, I've never burned out any headlight/fog light bulb in any other car I've had, including the 1989 BMW I've had since it was new (I'm sure I just jinxed those bulbs). I know that the DRLs are always on and won't last as long as headlight bulbs, but the fact that they burn out in the first year or two if f*@&ing ridiculous.

:chevy: I agree with the design flaws...our '89 suburban has all of the original bulbs in it. Mine have 40k miles and its 1 1/2 years old, and they are still going strong. (I probably just jinks them too). Along with the DRL's on the newer Chevy's always burning out, start looking at the center/3rd brake light on the current body style F-250/350's. Those things are always burned out. I see more DRLs on the Chevys burned out, but that center brake light on the Fords is out alot too!!! :D
