I'd driven a standard cab step side with the 4.8L before and thought it had decent power. I'm not sure about how it will do in an extended cab short bed. Will have to wait until Matthew leaves the area before I can get a test drive in.

i'd look for a 5.3 tbh, that little bit of motor size actually does something lol. d15491f098786bf8a6a2ff00f30a8dcd.jpg this is my 00 5.3 Z71... 3.73 gears. Lovely, n it moved fairly nice for stock.

Maybe I shouldn't say gutless. But, his old truck ('06 Sierra 5.3 3.23) seemed to have more balls even with higher gears than his current '11 Sierra 4.8 3.42. Both same configuration, Crew cab short bed 4x4. Also I'll add that I didn't think a late full size truck could tow less than my '14 since it has the stupid 3.08s, but he '11 is actually rated 1,000 lbs less even though his has 3.42s. If you don't use it for towing a 4.8 wouldn't be a horrible thing, but the 4.8 just doesn't feel like a V8. I understand it was a gas saver option, but still it's a V8 and I personally would want it to at least feel like a V8 while driving. I remember the other day my buddy gunned it and I could do nothing but snicker.

We made it down to New Bern, NC and got the truck on Tuesday. Only thing done so far was removing the side rails so that I could install the tonneau cover. Tonight I picked up a can of Duplicolor Custom Wrap in Graphite Metallic, wanted silver but this is the closest I've found local. Plan is to pull the bowtie from the grill and give it a few coats. While at it, I'm going to paint the gray on the grill black and the bracket in front of the radiator black.

I painted the core support and grill black. I used Duplicolor Custom Wrap (Graphic Metallic) to paint the bowtie. The rear bumper was pushed into the sheet metal; was able to loosen bolts and pull it away (still think it's bent, but is looks better). Plan on shortening the tail pipe and adding a tip, adding a Spectre drop in air filter (last truck had one), getting a carpeted dash cover (last truck had one), and a set of in-channel vent visors. I might do a muffler swap (not sure what I'd go with and won't open that can of worms here). Since this is my daily driver, I don't want to do anything major to it right now.

I know the previous owner had a stack of service receipts. I need to go through them and see what exactly has been done and, more importantly, what hasn't. I've also ran through the RPO codes and found out exactly what this truck has. Course, I also found the original window sticker in with the owner's manual.

So far, I'm liking the 4.8L. First tank of gas lasted a little over 3 weeks. Old truck with the 5.3L seemed like I was filling it every couple of weeks. For what I do and the way I drive, I'm thinking the 4.8 will do fine.

One thing sucks in the month that I've had it, a couple of weeks ago, the water pump went out. Ended up changing the water pump, thermostat and the antifreeze. At least I can mark flushing the antifreeze off the service list. I don't mind that it went out. I just would have preferred that it would have waited a while before doing it.
