4x4 Noise

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys if this has been beaten to death but i did search and look to see if i could find my answer before posting.

I purchased 2012 Sierra 4X4 crew-cab this summer, The truck is fantastic, My question is when in 4x4 hi (in snow) should there be any noise emitted from the drive line while accelerating? I have noticed there is a noise ( Comparable to a bearing just starting to wear) when accelerating. Once you take your foot off the noise goes away.

Essentially should you know you are in 4x4 besides the light on the dash?

I had an 06 and i don't remember the 4x4 being noisy

Any help would be appreciated.

Hard to say for sure without hearing the noise.

However, every 4x4 I've ever drove always made some extra noise when driving in 4wd. The noise I've heard is from a bunch of extra gears meshing and other rotating assemblies in the drive train.

My 2007 had water in the front differential turning it's fluid into milk. In 4wd, it made a very loud "grinding" sound. I'd check your fluid ASAP.

How are the tires? All good and equal wear?

Driveline noises in 4WD or AWD vehicles caused by loading may be mistaken for transfer case or front axle noise because they can sound very similar. Four-wheel drive noises caused by loading may exhibit the following conditions:

• The noise will be greatest on a clear, dry road and decrease on a low traction surface. Front axle or transfer case noise caused by bearings, ring and pinion, or planetary gearing will be similar on all surfaces.

• The noises or feel that can be expected will increase while making a tight turn.

• The noises may be changed from a deceleration to an acceleration condition (or acceleration to deceleration) by raising or lowering tire pressure at one end of the vehicle.

TIRES
Tire rolling rates can be a major factor in operational characteristics. Consider the following important items:

• All tires are the same size and brand. Tires of different brands may have different circumferences (or radius) even if they are the same size.

• Tires are set to factory recommended pressures. A tire with low air pressure will roll at a different rate.

• All tires have approximately equal amounts of wear. Tires with different amounts of wear will roll at different rates.

• All tires are the same tread type. Don't mix on-off road, all-season or street tires on the same truck as they may have different circumferences and roll at different rates.

• One or more of the tires may show small, short scratches around the circumference of the tire tread. The tire "scuffing" on the road surface causes these scratches.

The truck has aprox 105k on it and has never seen water so I don't think the fulid would be milky but I will be checking it . The tires have aprox 10km on them and are all wearing evenly and do not hum. The noise is only present under acceleration in 4x4.

Sounds normal to me. My truck makes some noise under acceleration while 4 wheel drive. you have to remember how many moving parts you now have while engaged.

Water forms in the way of condensation so you can never go in water and still have water in the oil. If the vehicle is not driven long enough for the moisture to dissipate then it accumulates.

There is a Rough Country Leveling kit installed on it (before i got it ), Would this be the cause of my noise perhaps a different drive line angle? and is it something to worry about?
