2016 Silverado bumper replacement opinions needed.

Hey all,

 

Not long ago my truck was rear ended and caused some damage to the rear bumper.

 

I took it to a GM body shop, and they redid the summit white bumper, and installed new mounting parts. It looks great, except on the side that was hit. It's still pushed in and down, even with the new hardware.

 

I took it back the next day and was told that the brackets are bad, and that they will need to remove the bed to replace them.

 

Any thoughts on this? Should I let them remove the bed? That seems like a bad idea to me on a truck with less than 2k miles.

On the 2500 the bumper brackets are welded to the frame so the bed needs to be removed in order to correctly fix them. They may be able to straighten them on a frame machine also with the bed on, depends on the extent of the damage. I would get it fixed asap as the longer you wait the less apt the insurance will be to pay. I wouldn't be worried about the bed being removed at all. Also you may look into a diminished value claim if the do need to remove and weld on new brackets.

I am surprised they released the truck to you with a crooked bumper without explaining the additional problem. I wouldn't be concerned about a reputable body shop removing the box to do a proper job. I definitely would ask them why they skipped this step in the first place. Are you paying out of pocket and they were trying to save you some money?
