50 or 70 Series Flowmaster???

I have been wanting to put a catback system on my truck for quite some time now. The only thing that I worry about is the noise levels inside the cab. I have a standard cab with a short bed 99 Silverado. I was thinking about getting the 50 series Flowmaster but am not sure about the noise levels. It must sound pretty sweet outside but what about inside. I don't want anthing that will be annoying to listent to and cause me to hate it. Flowmaster says that the 70 series is almost as quiet as stock. To me this is the way to go if I dont want all the interior noise but will I be wasting my money on a muffler that dosent make any noise? Any input is appreciated.

I have american thunder cat-back on my 95 silverado and i love the sound. Its not really that loud inside. There is some resonance but not enough to annoy ya. and outside wow does it sounds good. not really loud but has that deep rumble on idle and acceleration is deep till bout 2300 rpms then it seems to quiet down for some reason. the american thunder has the 40 series in it but you can get the resonator that gets rid of the resonance. :thumbs::cheers:

seems they're entire media content is devised to answer questions like yours with downloadable sound samples of different makes/models and charts with interior/exterior sound levels.

 

i'm about to make a similiar decision based on my application (1500HD 4x4 6.0L CrewCab). i have duals meeting at the muffler (with seperate cats) and a single out from the muffler. i'm looking to change this configuration however it needs to be for best performance gains - any advice out there?

FLOWMASTER!!!! :) my friend had Borla's on a 2500hd 6.0l and he was very disappointed so he went with flowmaster and he loves it!

I'd take it as a grain of salt but this fella has some choice words to say against his decision on borla's exhaust.

Borla bites! One of the few truck related purchases I wouldn't do over is the TRD exhaust. From that big, goofy tip just begging to be torn off (and spiteful enough to crunch the rear quarter panel in the process) to the weak, too-thin stainless on the muffler, it was a disappointment.

I have a Y2K Silverado with a 4800 LR4 engine with a Flowmaster 70 series single to dual muffer and I think that it has all the rumble I want with-out aftermaket headers (not yet) anyway! Just have the muffler shop cut off the old one and hear what the differances are in the 40,50,and 70 series then you'll know what you want to listen to every time you start your truck! VROOOOOOM

I have the 40 series Flowmaster (3" in dual 2.5" rear exit w/3.5" tips) and it sounds awesome. There is in-cab resonance up to 60 - 65 mph but that does not bother me. I like it LOUD! :fume: After 65 mph there is little or no resonance in the cab. As far as sound outside the truck- AWESOME! :thumbs: I have also heard that if you run the pipes turning out behind the rear tires that will cut down some on the resonance. Depending on what type of driving you do the most, this might work for you.

i'm with you guys. i think it's going to be a flowmaster 70 series (i don't want to sound like i'm trying to hard while accelerating - what would the ford guys think!) will be a good fit for me. though the american thunders that 3500duramax mentioned sound great but i don't think they'll quite down at high RPM on my gas application (6.0L).

I've got a pair of the Flowmaster 40's on mine. 3" in and 2.5" out on each going to a pair of 3" tailpipes that exit at a 45 degree angle. I thought I was too old for something like this. Then I gave it a listen. Sounds great. Even with all of the rain we've been having in the Northeast, I drive with my window down.

I also tow a larger size camper with it and I ALWAYS get compliments of how good it sounds when under load. People love it. (Well not so much when I leave early in the AM but when I come in during the afternoon, :)

Thanks for all the replys guys. I think I'm gonna get the 70 series. If it is to quiet then I can always swap it out for something different. I would rather have to quiet than to loud at first. Anyone know of any place to get them for cheap?? Also what size pipes do I need? 3" inlet and dual 2.5" exits??? Not to sure. Thanks again.

Sounds like a good idea to me! If the 70 is not loud enough, you can always swap it out for a 50, then to a 40. Just find what you're comfortable with. :) You can also see if anyone you know has any of the mufflers in question installed on their truck to see how they sound and how much resonance they have. I think the 3" in dual 2.5" out will work just fine for you.

 

BTW- I had mine done at the local Auto King muff shop. $260.00 for muff, pipes, tips and labor. :thumbs:

I know mine needed to be Dual in and Dual out.. but i just got single in and dual out and they had to make a pipe to fit it.. it is restricting air flow though :)

I don't think it's very restrictive as long as they fabricated the y-pipe correctly. My truck has this setup stock- 2 cats into a y-pipe to the muffler.

Why didn't the guy with the borla get a replacement if they are supposed to be guaranteed for the life of the vehicle (1 million mile warranty)?

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.  
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
