Tranny idle whine

2002 1500 hd, also with 4l80, and exactly the same as what you described.  Did you ever figure it out?

Mine likes to go into overdrive what feels a little early, as well....  I'm leaning toward a dirty tranny filter.  I've only owned the truck for the last 10k miles of its 170k, and don't know when the filter was changed last, so I'm gonna start there.

Next time I have the truck out, I'll listen close to the power steering and see if that's what it is. Trouble is, i don't hear it much on short trips unless it's a hot summer day. I noticed it today after a 3 hour highway drive

My transmission whining as well .. it sounds like one of those Hybrid Metro buses..  I even had a passenger comment (my sister) she said it sounded just like being on the bus...

Its the 2ML70 'EVT' 4 speed automatic w/CVT Transmission . 88,882 MILES

The HIGHEST temperature is 165F shown  even on hills

 

157-160 is typical under normal driving conditions.

I never figured it out, I sold the truck about a year ago to get a diesel. I never had any issues out of my Silverado trans despite the noise
