Look at the specs on the engines. On my LY6, max torque is 4300 RPM, max horsepower is 5400 RPM. Similar numbers on my L9H. These engines love to rev.

 

Even the 5.3 in my '01 - I towed all over the country in third gear in my '01. Logged over 13,000 miles of it. 4.10 axles meant the engine was at 3200 RPM at 65 MPH. That engine is at 240k, and still runs perfect.

 

I beat on my 2500 Burb even worse. I don't think I've driven it one time without doing at least 1 WOT run to 50 or 60. There isn't even a redline on the tach. It winds right to 6000 RPM. That truck has 160k miles on it, and runs perfectly.

 

These aren't your old-school 70s-era smallblock Chevy engines that you never wanted to rev above 3K for fear of floating valves or throwing a rod. These are modern, VVT engines that happily rev to 4, 5, 6000 RPM.

You need to re read, he was talking in neutral not in gear. I'm 61 had plenty of small blocks, I have a blown small block now 6K (in gear) is no problem owned some with a 6500k red line. I have VVT right now it red lines at 8500. My roller 74 454 in my impala 6k no problems that was in the 80s. Anybody that had a gear in their car in the 60s thru the invention of over drives were we're cursing at 3K going through the traps at 6K at least.

Lol...turned into a pissing match about rpm capabilities of modern v8 engines. If I may offer a counter point, Cadillac Northstar engines clog up the rings when not driven spiritedly.

We had to do something to add some life to your thread.

 

Just for the record intheburbs, those stock 70's era V-8's would pull strong to 5000 RPM's all day and valve float did not occur until 5800+RPM's and that includes the 454's.

Anyway, my oil got changed tonight. I pulled it onto the rack hot and poured in the motor flush while it was idling at temperature. Let it run almost 15 minutes afterward. Lifted the beast up and drained the oil out, then sprayed half a can of carb cleaner in the oil pan through the drain plug hole. Poked and scraped around as much as I could with a straightened out hanger, then sprayed the other half of the carb cleaner in, and chased that with brake parts cleaner. Little bit of junk came out, but no more than normal given the mileage.

Add some life. Lol. We took the oil filter apart while I was refilling the crankcase. Pretty dirty for a little over 300 miles on it. Like, sea salt sized pieces of grime were caught in the filter. No metal though. Caught a sample of the oil as it was draining. No metal there. Looked like 300 mile oil with solvent based motor flush in it. Little bit of grainy oil sludge gross in the bottom of the cup. Looked just like what was in the filter media. Going to run it till the oil life monitor says it's time to change the oil this time.

If it was me, I would do a filter only change in about 500 miles, then open it up to see how much crap it caught. Depending on what I found, additional filter only changes might be in order before a full oil change.

Yay! Got my plates today...on the second attempt. While mounting the rear plate, I put LED bulbs in my license plate lights. Hope they are illuminating enough for the local constabulary. I hate shiny license plates reflecting light all over, also hate carwashes with an appetite for license plates, so I put smoked polycarbonate "unbreakable" covers on both plates. Bubble type on the front, flat for the rear. Being particular as I am, 2 screws was not enough for the front plate, so I mounted it with the 2, and drilled 2 more holes. I used 4 on the back, too.

I figured I would take care of my burned out DRL bulb while I was at it. Jeepers! They should remote mount the lights and run fiber optic cables to the headlights! I might be more annoyed by this than I should be, as I haven't had to remove a headlight in 4 cars. Hidden bolt behind the fender liner? Really? Lol, then my dumb ass managed to install both bulbs in the sockets backwards. After correcting their orientation, I chose to test for function BEFORE reassembly. Yay, no more "Hey, you have a DRL out!"

I suppose... I used my last 32 hours of vacation time this week for 2 reasons. First reason is an annual thing that occurred on Tuesday this year, the second was to service my drivetrain.

Someone who I thought was my friend invited me to his shop on Tuesday, even suggested that I wear my working on cars clothes. So, I spent all morning helping someone replace an engine, among other things. The people I thought were my friends got lunch for everyone except me on Tuesday. When I said "that's ok, I'm not hungry anyway" one of these people, who knows that I don't care for any occasion that ends in Day, ran to the store and got a ridiculous stupid cake with some dumb words on it. Then he followed me around with it all afternoon, constantly reminding me of what day it was. So, I got all greasy and dirty, was excluded from lunch, taunted about some stupid occasion, and wasted 1/4 of the last of my paid time off until next year for nothing. Needless to say, these people and everyone associated with them have been moved from my contacts list to my block list.
