What needs done is in jobs like this that ivovle security issues is to to tell employees that they will do their job right or if they screw up they will do jail time.  Last year alone the INS lost millions of dollars worth equipment.  Among the worst was that firearms were lost and later were found to have been used in crimes.  Now how someone can lose a firearm and not lose their job I will never know.

I don't care what  your job is even if you have to clean toilets the  only thing should be is to do your job with pride and do it right instead of just to collect a check.  When someone works for the government or something that involves the security of others they should be held to much a higher standard.  If they cannot do the job right then find someone that will do it right.

Don't know if anybody else heard this, but I heard on the News either Ashcroft or one of our other Leading Federal Officials wants the whole INS scrapped and 2 different Committees (Which would deal with the same things the INS deals with) put in it's place.

One of the problems with our government is its decentralized approach to everything.  It wasnt too many years ago that one state didnt have a clue as to what the other was doing as far as criminal records, most wanted, even tickets -anybody remember when "reciprocal states" was the new thing?  One state recognized traffic tickets you got in another state...One of the best things they could do is centralize the records of known terrorists, foreign trouble makers, etc.  and allow ALL agencies to access them for record checks and REQUIRE them to do so.  You want to come in our country?  Sure!  Just let us check you against this list!  Want to buy a gun?  Get a pilots license?  Buy explosives?  Sure....just let us check......The thought that we live in a society where two kids from New Hampshire can open up a web site and attract millions of visitors in a year but the federal government cant track KNOWN bad guys is incredible!!!

Is this a nomination for the kids from New Hampshire to head up the "new" INS?  LOL  :D

lol...that is so true newbie.  We need to get a central database with all of this stuff provided to it from all law enforcement agencies in the country and also from the intelligence community so that we are all able to go to one place, enter some person's name and find out if we should let them in the country or shoot their terrorist ass.  But none of that is going to happen unless our Congress gets off of their butts and does something about it.  While the INS has made many mistakes on their own, Congress certainly has multiplied the situation many times worse.  They have been saying for years they would reorganize the agency and get them funds they need desperately to update their agency, but none of it has happened yet.  I work for a government agency (USGS) and I see all the time the inefficency of Congress that prevents us from being able to do a effective and proper job, instead of having to half-ass things to get by.  Hopefully someday they will get their butt in gear.  Ohh, I see another campaign issue...hehe...I will have to write that down for my Senate campaign in about oh 30 years, give or take a few... :D
