Anyone taken the flares off their HD?

Has anyone taken the flares off to check for rust or possibly to see what it looked like with them off or maybe just to clean behind there?

 

It looks like a prime spot for rust to start.

I have seen 3 or 4 HD's without the Flares. All had removed them while fairly new. One had installed fender trim identical similar to what is on my truck. I think it is a toss up in the looks department compared to color matched flares. I feel both look far better than the black matte flares.

 

I would think there would be some abrasion of the paint under the flair if the truck had many miles on it.

I pulled the black ones off to put Victory red ones on. They were off for about a week, and honestly, it doesn't make that much of a difference. Flares on is better, but not that much. I wouldthink that only the lowest inner lip of the fender would be most susceptible to rust.
