Looking at newer, used. What are the best years?

Hey all,

I'm looking to trade for a newer, used 4x4 and I was wondering if any years are better than others. I tow a 7000# trailer, do some off-roading (fixing fences, going out into the meadows and up into the forest to do maintenance, plus hauling the tractor) for which I use a pickup truck. For me it's a tool, not a driveway queen.

I'm figuring to stay away from stuff like lifts and chipped trucks, the first because we both have some mobility issues and can't get into a tall truck, and I just don't want a truck that's been abused. Used, fine. Abuse, no. It's one of those things where you say, "I'd like to buy from a guy like myself".

I'm figuring on looking for the larger engine, mostly because it'll likely be better set up for towing; because when we go, I don't want to be abusing the truck. Sticking with or doing better than my current 9500# rating would be great. I currently tow with a 5.6l engine, and I'm okay with slowing down on hills. After all, that's what passing lanes are for.

So, which years would be best to look at?

Thanks for the patience if this has been covered already, but I couldn't find anywhere it has.

Any of the years. I have a 14 myself and have had no issues at all. Oh I had a seat squeak that was super easy to fix, findin it was the tough part. Then again my buddy had a 14 and he had the shakes issue and his head unit would freeze up on him. You'll see some in the 16-17 year range have the same issues as the 14-15 years. Whatever it is you get, drive it and check it out first obviously. Seem like you know what you're lookin for. I have the 6.2/6 speed/3.42 setup. It's awesome, tows great. If I could've found one with a max tow package and 3.73s I'd have been happier but this truck does it all for me

I miss my 2010 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4x4. It was a workhorse and looked good doing it. I towed a 5er, used it hunting 4 wheel trails in the Sierra, desert runner, daily driver and surf sesh traveller. Loved it and it did everything I wanted it to do. So did my spartan F250 SD.

Lighting is much improved in the 16+. Otherwise I would make sure to take a good test drive and make sure the gear ratios are what you’re looking for. Don’t take the word of the salesman, check the glovebox for the RPO code for the ratio you require. Many trucks are sold with the mileage ratios (3.08) and aren’t rated to tow 9k. With the 3.42 you should be close to what you’re coming in with, rating wise. I’m talking ratios for the 6 speed, they’ll be a little different for the 8 speeds. Do your research and get what you need.

Good luck!

I had my '14 for three years before I traded it in and never had an issue, so there are definitely some gem used vehicles around! Just take it for a 70-80mph test drive.

No matter what year of size truck you decide, consider the addition of a driver's side assist handle (that missing GM accessory) will expand the field of suitable size trucks.
