auto-dim mirrors

I know there is a sensor on the rear view mirror that triggers the auto-dimming, but where is the sensor for the side mirrors. I have a sneaking suspicion that my passenger side mirror is no longer dimming and I would like to know more about it. Thanks in advance...

i think the dimming of the outside mirrors are controled by the inside rear view mirror. They all work together. I may be wrong, but that is what the wiring diagram says.

Really? All three of mine dim independantly. The passenger one does not dim all of the time but never fails when the idiot has on their high beams.

Not if they're the factory mirrors used on most Silverados, they don't. Not even Escalade passenger mirror can autodim.

For one thing, dimming is controlled by the rearview mirror, the exterior mirror dimming only occurs when the rearview mirror dims. I have checked the 2003 service manual and confirmed this (no electrochromic circuit at all for the passenger mirror).

Also check page 2-59 of your owner's manual, it says so right there too.

If you have some kind of special towing or aftermarket mirror, then anything's possible.

Yeah, old body style passenger mirrors can dim. New body style passenger mirrors don't.

Thanks guys...

We have been having some consistent minor troubles with the tahoe and I didn't want to think that there was more crap coming with the mirrors. The wife is already talking about trading it in...

The general has kinda let us down with this one, but there's nothing else out there that compares...

I figured out why the mirrors were acting goofy. I realized the problems started when my wife got a new job. She has a parking tag she has to keep on the rear view mirror and she just keeps it on there. I finally put two and two together, took the tag down, and the mirrors work just fine again. I didn't look, but there must be a second sensor on the back side of the mirror that compares light from the front and the back.
