Crappy E-brake performance. What brake shoes do I need?

I have a 2002 Suburban LS 1500 with the 5.4 and its a 4x4 automatic.

 

The rear parking brake shoes don't appear to be worn out, but I'm constantly fighting with them. They never hold the vehicle very well at all on a hill, and it puts strain on the parking gear in the trans. I have tried adjusting them as tight as I can without them rubbing, but after a few days, they are not working very well. I tried putting thread-locker on the adjusters to prevent them from backing them selves off. That helped alot, but they still are not very good. I want to replace the adjusters, shoes and all the associated hardware except the rotors. Im seeing two different types of shoes available for this rig. Some shoes have two clips and some shoes have one clip. Something about the GVW? The shoes are not interchangeable. What type of shoes do I buy? The one clip or two? How do I find out using the VIN#? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My '03 lost parking brake holding power. Wouldn't hold with brake on, in gear idle, no throttle.

Had to both:

Adjust shoes. (Don't threadlock the adjusters.)

Adjust parking brake cable. (They stretch over time, especially if used often.)

Can't comment on clip qty., but your auto parts store should give you the correct ones.

If in doubt, take home both, return the incorrect ones.

Don't waste money on expensive / premium shoes.

I replaced the cable, and have adjusted the e-Brake shoes several times. I can get the shoes for $20 with free delivery and the hardware kit for $10. (all from Amazon). Im wondering if the rotors needs to be resurfaced or replaced. What a shitty design! Why did they build it this way!

I bought new AC Delco (171-0992) for my 2009 which is a 1500 4x4. Been trying to put them on as my parking brake doesn't hold at all but now it seems this will have to wait until after Irma.

Can't imagine rotors having anything to do with the issue.

Re: crummy design: Having to pull the rotor to adjust parking brake is beyond dumb.

Why no plugged hole in backing plate so as to have ability to adjust with everything in place (as mfr.s have been doing for >60 yr.s.?

I'm not sure whats wrong. I agree that the rotors are probably fine, but i'm running low on options. Maybe i'm expecting too much out of the e-brake..... Image a 2002 Suburban on a very VERY steep hill, with 1,000 pounds of cargo. Should the e-brake be able to hold the vehicle in place by itself? I have read many posts online about people having similar issues with this.

Can't comment on that specific scenario, but mine will hold while in gear under a fair bit of throttle.

It's the cable. I ran into the same problem with my 01 4x4 Burb. Been replacing the various sections of the cable to eventually achieve holding ability.

Hmm. I had not considered that. So your saying that the cables are stretching. I replaced the cable that runs from the equalizer to the front of the rig, because it broke (#8). There are a total of 4 cable sections. Did you replace all 4 sections, or just a couple? Which sections made the biggest difference for you?

 

Obviously this Google picture is not accurate to the vehicle, however it does show the different sections of the brake cable system.

....Do you feel that it would work well enough to be an emergency brake? Like if your hydraulics completely failed?

Well, which is why they're now referred to as "parking brakes" (vs. emerg. brakes).

Anecdote: My hydraulics failed once (well documented crummy brake line issues). It sure helped slowing down.

I would say at highway speeds, it would be more of a smoky re-entry than a quick stop.

One of the rear cables could be bound up so only one brake is actually holding the truck.

That shot of your brake line rust says to me cable can very well be bad.

Been down the rusty line road myself.....

RPO code label in the glove box will tell you what GVW brake package your truck was built with.

Thanks sefiroxx, you nailed it. Even thought the right rear cable appeared to be working correctly, there was a hidden spot that was worn though and badly rusted. Once off the vehicle, the cable would not move inside the sleeve by hand.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
