Mirror cap removal

I have the DL8 mirrors on my Sierra that are colour matched to my truck (Stone Blue).

I found a set of DL3 mirrors that I plan on installing on my truck. The DL3's have a chrome cap. I want to swap out the chrome caps for the blue caps from my original mirrors.

How do the caps remove from the mirrors without breaking any of the retaining tabs?

I did a search but only came up with a couple of posts where the service manual says to pull up and forward. Some guys said they tried following the steps only to break the tabs even though they were extra careful.

Has anyone removed the caps without breaking the tabs?

Chrome caps are more brittle. I have removed about 10 sets. Of the 10, only two came out unscathed.

Don't do it. Color matched looks so much better and the Sierra blue is damn nice looking

He wants to take his color matched caps and swap them onto the DL3's.
