Purpose for hole in underbody shield?

Trying to figure out what the square looking hole in the plastic underbody shield is for?   It doesn't appear to provide access to anything?  Just picked up a set of GM accessory metal skid plates to replace the thin plastic one on there now and both have the same hole but can't see what the reason is?  Is it for  some sort of visual inspection? Seems like just another place for dirt/salt and road grime to accumulate.

For those with a GM Card, there's $100 instant rebate on any service or parts purchase now through 12/31. This is what pushed me over the edge, the metal skid plate package lists for $250 but with $100 off, figured might as well by my self an early Christmas present :)

Well, without walking out to my truck to check, I could guess that it's additional airflow for the front diff. GM added a hole in revised skid plates for my Hummer H3 for this purpose.

Also under the driver side cab mount 2017 LTZ while attaching side steps I notice a second empty mount , I was thinking it was used for lining up cab during assembly , but it is not on the passenger side , second thought was some kind of extra dampening  mount , ??

Any one else have it ? just wondering its use

Do you have a part number available for the skid plate?

Isn't the oil pan one of the few things you want to shield and protect?  I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying it's a bad design.....
