Pop-Up ads

I think I have something on my PC that's causing all these popups to appear. Sites that I know never had popups now have them. I'm wondering if there is something on my PC that is loading these when I visit certain websites.

I know there are pop-up blockers out there, but I really didn't have that much trouble with them until a few weeks ago. Something I can download that will clean them off??

First download Adaware6 install, update, and run.

Next turn off you Windows messenger service. If running 2000/XP go Start/Administrative Tools/Services and select Messenger. Set to Manual.

If you are not showing admin tools, right mouse click on the taskbar, select properties, check the box that says admin tools.

Last get a Firewall. Something cheap and easy like a Linksys 4 port router (BERSR41). You can find them for $50 - $70.

There are many free pop-up blockers that can be downloaded. A good place to start would be tucows.com or download.com Or, you can do what I did and switch to the Mozilla browser and it has a pop-up blocker built in. It can be found at Mozilla.org.

Hope this helps,

P.S. - dittos on Spybot. I have it and it does a great job of cleaning out the spyware.

I use Ad-aware, and Spybot. Both are good (especially for free) products.

For pop-ups, I use Pop-up stopper from Panicware. It doesn't stop the messenger popups, but it gets most of them. It's also really easy to use and free.

No, I do not use Virizon. I'm not sure what prompted this onslaught of pop-ups. I ran the Search and Destroy program and many items appeared when it did the search on my PC. I cleared off the ones I felt were adware programs and so far it has seemed to help.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Adaware and Spybot are good for getting rid of spyware and if you accept cookies you have a lot of spyware in your machine. Pop-up stopper Professional will stop the pop-ups.

I use the free one, and it stops just about all of them.

No need for the "pro" version here.
