Wife and I packed the dogs up for a little road trip. Going down the road, one of the dogs put er paws on the armrest on the door. No big deal except the the truck thinks the door is still open. I got out and verified that it was closed. Open door and closed a half dozen times. On top of that, my amp research steps won't retract because of said door. Traveled 600 miles with a false alarm and one extended step. Is there anything I could check before taking it to dealer when I get home?

The position sensor is part of the door latch assembly.  Unless there is something obvious you can see from the outside, you will likely need to take it in.  If you have the ability to work on it, you can try throwing parts at it to see if a new latch will fix it.  I had a similar problem with driver's door of my 08 Caddy.  I read through the procedure to diagnose it and realized I didn't have the tools to properly test everything.  I swapped the latch assembly and all was good again.  I got lucky that the latch was not just a waste of time and money.

****update**** All weekend, I had to deal with the idiot light saying door was open and the driver side step is extended. Looked really goofy. Somehow the sensor was working, and know both rear doors do not extend the steps out. Atva lost of what is going on. These steps have worked flawlessly for 6 months.

On the GMT900s the door wiring harnesses are known to crack and split causing all kinds of goofy things. Unsure if this kind of problem is just starting to surface in the K2s. Depends on how deep you want to get with this, but if it was me I'd inspect the wiring in the cab to door harness, that flexible rubber boot. I've fixed two airbag issues and a speaker by splicing broken wires back together on one truck.
