Adding aftermarket amp to stock radio?

Recommended Posts

I like the looks of my factory radio, so i don't want to replace it, but would like to add an amplifier to the existing system. Can this be done, and what would i need? Have any of you guys done this, and if so, where did you put the amp? Thanks

The factory radio dosen't have RCA outputs to carry the low level signal to the amp, so you'll need to buy a line out converter. It splices in on a speaker wire and gives you an RCA output to run the amp. You can get them at any stereo shop or electronics store for less than $30.

Or you could buy an amp that takes speaker line inputs. This woould make install a little easier too.

Fosgate makes a couple. I know the 500x will take speaker line, or RCA plugs.

If you have an extended cab, you can mount the amps on the back wall, behind the rear seat. If you have a regular cab, you can mount it on the rear wall, or under the seat (if your amp is small enough).

Hope this helps.

I have a 2002 extended cab. I kept the stock head unit but added a

Fossgate 400X amp and Infinity speakers all around. I did the work last summer and can't remember for sure, but with that amp I think I had to buy a line converter that was mentioned in the post above. No big deal at all to install if you go slow and give yourself plenty of time. Good Luck.

He's also got some other cool items on the his page to help you retain some of the OEM functions of the stereo if your thinking about upgrading your head unit.

Most Rockford amps have the inputs from a factory unit, go to like a Best Buy that's near you and ask the guys in car audio/install bay and they would know what to do.
