woyster_00z71 Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 My 2001 Tahoe has a single in, dual out muffler on it with pipes straight out the back and stainless tips on it. Anyway, I noticed the other day that the driver's side tailpipe was hanging low. So I took it to a shop yesterday to have it looked at. As it turns out, the muffler is falling apart and the baffle is coming loose. So I am going to have to replace the muffler soon. I was looking at the one on it, and I know it isn't stock since in is single in, dual out. But it doesn't have a manufacturer on it, only the numbers 801041 and 33813. I am looking for something a little louder than what is on it currently. The guy at the shop told me he could put a DynoMax Super Turbo on it for $135 and a Flowmaster for $155. I thought that sounded a little high so I will be checking somewhere else. Anyway, what are your recommendations for a muffler replacement, single in dual out with a good bit of rumble while accelerating, not raspy or poppy, and minimal in-cab resonance? Dynomax, Magnaflo, Flowmaster...other? Thanks, B.J.
chevy38fan Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 I got my flowmasters on my tahoe installed for 190. and that's because the mufflers cost 90 each. Flowmasters only run about 100 bucks, and most places won't charge you for install if you buy it from them. I love the throaty sound of the Flowmasters. I'd definately go with them, if that's the sound you like. Also the Raven mufflers sound good also, much more throatier and louder than Flows. then again they cost more, and they don't have any chambers, it flows through in a wave design. My friend has that on his dodge (single in dual out) and its just as loud as my dual Flowmasters. I'd definately recommend that, if you want the sound of true duals without paying the price of them.
MountaineerTom Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 A friend of mine just ordered a new Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow for his Ram from CarQuest for right at $100 he said. I had a 40 series on mine for a couple years, and it sounded good, but got annoying in the cab on the 6 hour trip back home. I have a 70 series now. It's louder than stock, but not annoying in the cab at highway speeds.
greyghost03 Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 I would recommend Flowmaster! If you don't want it to be that loud you could go w/a 50 series or even quieter, a 70 series. The price you were quoted sounds about right. Just the muffler itself can cost form $80 to $100, depending on where you purchase it and they have to make some money on the labor. BTW - a buddy of mine at work has the Dynomax you mentioned and after hearing my truck w/the 40 series Flowmaster is seriously considering ditching it. The Flowmaster sounds deeper and not as raspy.
woyster_00z71 Posted September 8, 2003 Author Posted September 8, 2003 Well, a little over a week ago now I replaced my rusted out muffler with a Magnaflow single-in, dual-out muffler. I already had a single-in, dual-out so I just used the existing tailpipes and tips with the new muffler. I am EXTREMELY pleased with the new Magnaflow. Very throaty and noticeable with mid to hard acceleration yet quiet at highway speeds up to 70+ mph. Not too loud but I can set off the car alarms in the parking garage now. The guy at the muffler shop told me what was on it previously was a Flowmaster clone. He then started up his truck with the Magnaflow on it and I was sold. Just thought I would let you guys know. Thanks for the input, B.J.
