Battery Problems

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a ‘17 Dmax, and have a hardwired dash cam tat draws 5w. Last year I drove the truck daily and never had any issues with starting on the coldest days. This year I drive it all weekend and it sits from Mon/Thur... the battery is dead by Thursday night.

So my question is should that 5w draw kill the battery like this? Seems like it should be more resilient. I hate to ruin a day by going to the dealer..

Thoughts?

I rewired my cigarette lighter so that they shut off when the key is off. Then i bought a dash cam that has parking lot protection. If it feels a bump, it turn on and records for 30 seconds, then shuts off.

I would re-wire your camera and or outlets, and buy a battery load tester.

Here is a good price on a load tester:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Load-Tester-100-Amp-6V-12V-Mechanics-6-12-Volt-Car-Truck-New-Battery-USA/282405272159?epid=921928083&hash=item41c0aa7a5f:g:a9cAAOSwfVpYooLU:rk:53:pf:0

Or, if you want to receive it quickly:

https://www.amazon.com/Schumacher-BT-100-Battery-Load-Tester/dp/B000AMBOI0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1544308192&sr=8-3&keywords=battery+load+tester

I have the BlackVue 650 dual on the truck. I turned the WiFi off to it to reduce the draw to 3.8w. Still finding it odd that a 5w draw kills batteries in less than 5 days. I think these trucks have two batteries too.

As batteries age, they slowly degrade. Every day that goes by it loses some of its integrity. Its possible that the battery is just getting worn out. The load tester will tell all. That being said, leaving the camera on for days as a time is probably not a great option. If you do want to keep the camera on all the time, consider getting one of these:

I agree... a truck under the age of 2 shouldn’t have battery issues. I know a battery tender will help...but..... the battery shouldn’t really be that weak this early in its life. I’m taking to be tested tonight.

All auto parts stores test batteries for free.

Also, if its still under warranty - might as well have them swap it out. Make sure the battery is bad though, or they might charge you $150 for an electrical diagnostic - and then send you on your way without doing anything.

I thought about this as well. But not sure I want the same low tiered battery to deal with in another 2-3 years... not that I want to pay $500 in new batteries either.

I would go with the free batteries. Even if you decide to buy your own upgraded batteries, have the dealer swap out the OEM batteries first, and then sell those on the side to help offset the battery upgrade cost. You will need to find some core batteries to turn in when you buy the upgraded batteries.

Aaaaamazing. I wasn’t thinking! But now you enlightened me.

Thanks!!!

Thanks! I actually have one in my VW. It’s just a timer. They sell a battery pack. I probably should look at that too.
