Air Intake on TBI 350

I have a 95 K1500 350 TBI and am wondering if removing the airbox that the connects to the fenderwell will gain me anything. It it the piece that is at the very beginning of the intake system on TBI's. Is this for sound reduction ? Does anyone make something to replace this ?

I have the 1990 with very low miles. I ran mine with the tube unplugged, between fill ups and noticed no differance at all. I drive with the windows were down so I don't know if the sound was any more or not. No difference in performance or fuel milage at all. Maybe after several thousand miles there may be a difference if the aircleaner is changed more often.
