Mp3023 transfer case compatible/Swappable with NP8 transfer case

Can the Mp3023 be swapped out for the NP8?

Was an available option for same year but are the pin outs/wiring harness the same?

This Mp3023 is the weakest link in my drivetrain. I keep destroying it. Any suggestions on upgrading? Or do I just Need the heavier duty NP8?

Thanks.

Well, GM went with the Magna Power after about ten years of using the New Process NVG246.  What makes the older case better?  What problems are you having with yours?

I keep having it rebuilt and I keep shredding it. I have high hp/torque motor/trans.

I have two friends both running over 1200hp.(drag race in both 4hi/awd and rwd) Their trucks came with the stock NP8 and neither have had any issues.

Everyone I've talked to basically says that they're(the NP8) pretty much bullet proof.

So... I'd also like to retain the push button functionality of the autotrac 2wd, awd, 4hi and 4low feature.

Thanks in advance for any help/recommendations

Ok.  I'm pretty sure the GMT900s used the NVG246 in 2007 but switched to Magna Power in 2008 or 2009, you'd have to look at a shop manual to see what the plugs are on both and I would imagine that the Transfer case module and programming would be different too.

Have you put up a post over at Performance Trucks?

What part do you keep breaking or tearing up?  I do a little drag racing with mine and have the MP3023 too.  I reckon that you launch in 4WD?

Is why I'm posting /asking on this forum. I don't have access to shop manuals without purchasing them. And every GM parts and service rep I've talked to has no idea either.

I will look into performance trucks... Thank you.

I don't know what parts I keep tearing up. This time it's something different /new. It's stuck in my driveway. Hasn't been towed to shop yet.

I've yet to launch awd at the track but have on the street.

The 246s are famous for "pump rub", getting a hole in the case from something rubbing against it over time.  I checked AllDataDIY for my truck but it does not show the 246 as an option for mine.  Check with those guys, they'll know for sure.

The pump rub has many easy fixes. Did it to my 4.8 with the same Transfer case. The clip in the back end of the transfer case kept falling out and that's why GM had so many issues but yet they refused to do a recall which would have been right on their part consider in that even people that just use them for regular snow driving not commercially we're having such many issues with it even in the gassers..

To the original poster I would suggest getting a hold of merchant Automotive. Com and they do a lot of performance stuff and we'll be able to tell you plus they are a full-service machine shop. MerchantAutomotive.com makes a larger pump that eliminates the clip and it works great. To be honest that was my first time ever removing and "splitting" open a transfer case. There's not much to rebuilding them either. Merchant Automotive works with a lot of the diesel guys, Allison Transmissions, they've also created various parts for industry fixes..

You can look them up on Amazon as they sell the kit on there or you can look elsewhere but I would suggest calling them as they could probably tell you quicker than anybody if you can swap one transfer case for the other and do a direct swap or what you need. As a matter of fact I will pick up the phone here shortly and call my local transmission shop. Oh wait I just realized they close to half an hour ago so if I think about it tomorrow I will do it.

If you call a Auto Parts Salvage Yard they should be able to tell you about compatibility at the minimum because their databases have a lot of that compatibility stuff. I would definitely have the VIN number or you could call the dealer with your VIN number and they would be able to tell you as well if they have a parts department guy that knows his stuff. If he says he don't know ask them if there's another guy that specialized is more in that or if they have a transmission Tech on staff that would be able to tell you or maybe answer the question.

To be honest if your truck is lifted then it's really not that hard to pull your transfer case.

I have a base model 04 Chevy Tahoe and I pulled mine on the drive split it apart and then took it in to my local transmission shop and had things looked over. They replaced the clutch pack and told me not to use the Auto 4 wheel drive anymore on snow or anything and always use the 4 high and only charged me $100 . I've always did work with them over the last 20 years so I know the owner and his son.
