AC Compressor

My 99 is making a loud noise when first started up. It sounds like a cross between squealing and screeching. I think it's the AC Compressor, but AC still works fine.

How essential is it that I fix it? Is it more likely to fix itself, stay the same, or seize? I can't hear it from inside the truck, so if it'll probably stay the same, I won't worry about it.

I had a noisy AC compressor on my 89 Olds. It clattered and also sounded like a bad exhaust leak. Funny thing is, I drove it like that for 2yrs and then it fixed itself. It's been fine for the past 6yrs.

look for the idler pulley bearing (which will lwave you stranded)

and the stationary pulley wheels (beaings also)

if its either one of these it will eventually leave you on side of the road

when you cut the a/c off does it stop

if so , you also have an idler pulley for it as well

best to get under truck to look at it

small belt

you can take it off with a3/8" ratchet

you can't replace just the pulley

the assembly is sold at the dealer for about 35.00

You guys were right, turns out it's not the compressor afterall.

It still makes the noise when I turn off the AC.

It's quiet as can be if the truck has been driven, it's only noisy when it has sat overnight. Today was 10-degrees warmer than yesterday, and the noise wasn't nearly as loud this morning.

I can't find the TSB about the idler though. Have a TSB #?
