Tick from rear wheel area

Hey everyone just got a new 18’ z71 has the 5.3. Other then the 70mph shake and clunky transmission I have a ticking noise from the rear wheel area. At least that’s where it sounds like it’s coming from. Doesn’t really happen lower then 30mph but once your above that it is a lot louder. Next to a wall or another car you can hear it very loudly. Took it in for the hard shifts, vibration and the noise. They of course said the trans is learning and then said the tick is my key chain I laughed and said I will drive it till it breaks. It’s more annoying then anything. It sounds like a rock is stuck in the tire which it isn’t. But that’s the closest thing I can tell you as to what it sounds like. Any help with this as the tech wasn’t very helpful!!

How frequently do you hear the tick?

The flapper for your V4 mode is in the tailpipe in the area of your passenger rear well. It restricts the pipe so you don't sound like a Honda with a needlessly oversized exhaust in V4 mode.

I know a guy who changed his muffler and had them cut the flapper since it does reduce your V8 tone even when open... He regretted it instantly. If you have it removed, have a range device or a tune to disable V4.

They are known to be audible and make a click that gradually becomes a little squeak as time wears on.

Lower in speed, say 30 mph you will stay in V8 mode. At higher speeds depending on demand it will switch between V4 and V8 as needed.

Shift to L5 (pull the shifter past D to L, then press the + button until you have L5. This will reduce available gears to only 1-5 AND it stays in V8. Try it and see if the sound goes away. I think it's probably that.

It happens in both v8 and v4
Are you sure?

Seriously, try L5 for a day and listen for it. I am not there to hear but I sincerely believe it's the flapper.

Check your spare tire, make sure it's winched up tight. Then be sure the spare tire tools are secured tight.

The only other "rear end clicking noise" I'm familiar with is a rear end about to let go, but you said it's a new truck.

Do you have a (fabric) box cover? If I forget to fasten down the tie down strap clips they will "click" against the rear window. With either a dble or crew cab the noise sounds further back than it is.

No box cover.  Tried the above method and happens in both v8 and v4. At speed it is consistent. Not intermittent like a flapper. Sounds like a rock in the tire with consistency.

Yes tried in l5 and noise is still there. Going to be changing exhaust today and will see. But it sounds like it’s from the wheel somewhere. Not to sure.

    • We drove about 15 minute east today to visit a friend and saw a steep increase in price in the same county. About 50 cents a gallon steepper.
    • Sure about that? A degree wheel and a dial indicator would lower your degree of assurance in that statement. 😉    It why we have offset keys and dialable timing sprockets. Just say'n.... I've built a few and have never seen one "On the money".
    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
