Hi, I have a 2013 GMC 2500HD, with 197K miles. In 2016 dealer replaced reducdant heater (P21DD) at 86,500 miles.  I understand from reading this forum that this is common failure for 2013's.  My question is, check engine light came on and code is P21DD, is the failure of the reducdant heater happening again common? Or might this be caused by another issue?  This truck is serviced on a regular basis. Have also just replaced the def system thermometer and had filter cleaned.  Thank you, Mrs S

It's a pretty common failure. They just came out with a special coverage to cover the module (which contains the heater) but I do not believe 2013 fall in the coverage.

  • Thank you for responding, you are correct no coverage for 2013, but replacing 2 reductant tank heaters in 1 in 2016 and having to do another one now, is that for the norm?

It shouldn't be but it is. I live in SC in the rural part. 90% of the vehicles we sell are farm trucks which are normally diesels. This is a once a week repair at our shop. I'm not recommending this, but for 1000 you can get the def system removed and programmed out. lol

Based on this - https://gm.oemdtc.com/6957/special-coverage-diesel-emission-fluid-tank-reservoir-2013-2015-chevrolet-gmc. 2013’s are covered. Coverage is 10 years or 120,000 miles.

my 2015 was replaced beginning of December around 60,000 miles. Jump over to Duramaxforum.com and it is pretty common failure.

Depending on on where you live,  the DEF system accidentally failing off might not be an option for you due to emissions.

Again, thank you for responding, we are in west TN, semi-rural, have investigated the def system falling off, not a good option if out of town and needs towing a dealer or reselling.  I am told by local gm dealer, the 1st replacement tank heater is only covered 1 yr/12K miles, so way past that coverage.

Seems 2013 was just a bum year for diesels.  But, saying that at 76K miles had the reductant tank heater replaced in the 2015 Chevy Silverado! Just trying to figure out what we may or not be doing to help this situation.

It's nothing you're doing wrong. Just a failed part. Also 2013 isn't a bad year for the duramax. It's actually a great year. Just crappy DEF system.

Just frustrated and always in the back of the mind the def system failing while pulling a horse trailer.

Pretty sure I see some parts falling off.  Thanks again for taking the time to answer.  Mrs S
