Adding a trans drain plug

Recommended Posts

Alright I'm about to get my trans fluid flushed and then dropping the pan myself to change the filter and clean the magnet, but I'm thinking I should just install a drain plug on the pan to make fluid changes easier in the near future, has anyone done this? What does it entail and what should I do?

Thanks!

Piece of cake. Just go to any auto parts store, like Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto and pick up a drain plug kit. B&M makes one and there are other brands. Follow the directions that come with the kit.

When you drop the tranny pan and clean it up really well. Look around and find a spot that when you install the plug it will not interfer with anything on the bottom of the transmission. It is as simple as drilling a hole in the pan, placing the gasket washers between the pan and the bolt on the outside that goes through the pan and the nut that goes on the inside of the pan. Tighten to what they might call for in the directions. If no specific torque is given just make sure it is tight but not enough to crack the gasket washer.

After you drill the hole just make sure you debur the hole on both sides with a file or some 220 sand paper. This will give the gasket washers a better seal.

Then just install the pan and fill the tranny back up and your done. The B&M kit has a tapered plug fit that keeps it from leaking. Others I have noticed have an O-ring that goes on the plug. The tapered fit works well and with some teflon tape will work just fine and you don't have to worry about the oring getting cut and trying to find another on. Just remember not to over torque the drain plug because it is a tapered fit.

These plug kits are great if you don't have a drain plug. Makes changing the fluid so much easier.
